Get Out: Wickford Art Festival, Kites & More

Go fly a kite at Brenton Point State Park this weekend or visit Wickford Village for some artsy flair. Either way, this weekend's events are bound to send you soaring.

Where/When: Off Route 1A in Wickford Village and near the town beach, North Kingstown | Saturday and Sunday, July 9 through 10. The festival begins at 10 a.m. 

Why Go: Mingle with approximately 50,000 to 75,000 art enthusiasts over the weekend as you peruse over 200 booths devoted to original works of art.

Where/When:  Brenton Point State Park/Ocean Drive State Park, Ocean Drive, Newport, 02840 | Saturday and Sunday, July 9 through 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Why Go: Not only will you be able to witness hundreds of soaring kites, you'll also be able to enjoy the splendors of Brenton Point. Located on one of the most scenic oceanside roads in Newport, Brenton Point has parking, picnic areas, concessions, public restrooms, nearby fishing and hiking and more. So, go fly a kite and make a day of it. 

Where/When: Turf fields north of the Ryan Center at URI | Saturday and Sunday, July 9 and 10 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Why Go: Watch as 2,200 youth soccer players from the US and Canada compete in one of New England's largest soccer tournaments.

Lions Club 1st Benefit Bike Run & Show and Shine

Where/When: Mishnock Barn, 200 Mishnock Road, West Greenwich | Saturday, July 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: Gear up this Saturday to benefit children with cancer. Sign ups start at 9 a.m. at Mishnock Barn and riders set out at 11 a.m.

Pricing: $25 entry fee for rider and $20 for a passenger; for more information call 397-5689.

Strawberry Social

Where/When: Wakefield Baptist Church, 236 Main Street, Wakefield | Saturday, July 9 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Why Go: Grab some homemade shortcake or an ice-cream sundae to benefit Welcome House, a local homeless shelter.
