The Charm of Casey Farm
My farm fresh findings at the Coastal Growers Farmers Market at Casey Farm!
I am back in Rhode Island for the month of May and got reacquainted with my home state by going for a nice long run at Narragansett Beach to take in the beauty of this great state. On my way home to North Kingstown, I stopped by the Coastal Growers Farmers Market at on Route 1A. The farmers market goes on every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. throughout the summer months. Last summer I went almost every Saturday. It’s a great place for the whole family to enjoy a Saturday morning. Parents can get their shopping done while the children listen to a folk band or watch the pigs and chickens on the farm.
The seafood from Matunuck Oyster Farm was what caught my eye; fresh oyster, little necks, mussels and fish. The lack of oceans in and around Vermont coupled with the lack of ability for college dining services to make a decent seafood dish left a hole in my diet. I purchased some little necks and mussels and plan on combining them with fresh pasta for a special family dinner.
The next booth I made a stop at was Zephyr Farm. It is one of my favorites as they sell fresh “Besto Pesto” which I frequently put on pizza, pasta, and sandwiches. Today I wasn’t looking for pesto but picked up a bunch of greens that I enjoyed with dried cranberries, toasted walnuts and a tangy raspberry vinaigrette for lunch. I made my way around to other booths selling local honey, flowers, lamb, beef, breads, pastries, wood-fired pizza, and cheese.

After a long run on Narragansett Beach I was attracted to the samples of fresh bread and jam at Sweet Berry Farm. I sampled a lemon ginger marmalade that was very zippy, but quite delicious. Then I tried a peach raspberry jam that was heaven in a jar. It was sweet by not too sweet and just the right consistency. My taste buds came alive with the taste of this jam. I am very excited for breakfast tomorrow where I plan to lather up some nice pieces of crusty bread with my new found love in a jar! Stay tuned for what I do with the clams and mussels and make sure to pay a visit to Casey Farm next Saturday morning!
