Cicilline, Langevin, Whitehouse win Re-Election

Rhode Island voters favor Democrats in election.

It was a good night for Democrats Tuesday in Rhode Island. In Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District David Cicilline was able to win a second term against a tough race fought against Republican Brendan Doherty. The former head of the Rhode Island State Police strongly criticized Cicilline during the course of the campaign over his final leadership of the city of Providence when he was mayor for eight before heading to Washington two years ago. In the 2nd Congressional District James Langevin was able to win a seventh term over Republican Michael Riley. Riley reportedly lent his campaign more than $600,000. Langevin cited as accomplishments his work to maintain submarine production at Electric Boat and efforts to strengthen job training …

Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges …

Barack Obama Wins Rhode Island

Voters in Rhode Island on Tuesday cast their ballot for Barack Obama, giving him the state's 4 Electoral votes.

Barack Obama won Rhode Island’s 4 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. The Wall Street Journal along with the Associated Press has called the race in Rhode Island declaring Obama the winner. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Rhode Island. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections.  The economy was a key issue for many voters in the state.

I’m Your Mother and I Approve This Message!

As we move closer to Election Day, the candidates are all scurrying to showcase their platforms via TV ads. Thankfully, we know they mean what they say because they end each ad with "I Approve This Message."

Well folks, we’re getting closer to the finish line — at the time of this writing, Election Day is only 18 days, 13 hours and 22 minutes away.  We all know the outcome—one of the candidates will be elected, and with that said, we’ll only have to put up with a couple more weeks of watching political ads, looking at signage all over town, and enjoying the spirited posts that our dear friends post on Facebook who are rooting for the other party. You know the friends I’m referring to, right?  We all know someone who can’t help themselves but to rant and rave about their political stance and then throw the rest of us who don’t agree under a fast-moving bus. I love politics as much as the next guy, but somehow I’ve managed to stay on speaking …

FLASH POLL: Who Won the Obama-Romney Debate, Round Two

President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney squared off in the second presidential debate on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Here's how Rhode Island Republicans and Democrats reacted.

Rhode Island Democrats are more confident this time around in President Obama's debate performance over the first, while state Republicans feel former Gov. Mitt Romney's debate performance was less encouraging than the first.  That's the major finding of the Red and Blue Rhody flash polls sent out to local political influencers immediately after the debate ended Tuesday night. Obama and Romney faced off on Oct. 16 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y. in a town hall format, with CNN's Candy Crowley moderating a debate that covered both domestic and foreign policy. At the conclusion of the debate, Patch surveyed 52 Republicans and 51 Democrats, asking who they thought won the debate. Among those who responded, 61% of the Republicans …

LIVE BLOG: Rhode Island State Senate, House Forum

Patch will be live at Narragansett Town Hall to provide coverage of tonight's Q&A and candidates forum.

Hi folks! Tonight, we're going to be using the Cover It Live applet for the chat, since it's generally easier to follow along and what not. Please excuse any typos I have in advance though, since it's much tougher to edit with Cover It Live vs. using our usual story template.
