Power Outages Possible as Strong Winds Blow

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory as strong winds and isolated power outages continue on Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has extended a wind advisory on Thursday morning as strong, damaging winds from a passing nor'easter continue to effect Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. Gusts of up to 45 mph with sustained winds of 20 mph to 30 mph are expected to last through 3 p.m. today. "Winds this strong are capable of downing small tree limbs and branches, possibly causing isolated power outages," states the advisory issued by the NWS in Taunton, MA. "Driving can also be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles." The Newport Pell and Jamestown bridges had closed traffic to box trucks and certain commercial vehicles around 6:15 a.m. due to sustained gusty winds. Officials Predict Windy Night in Rhode Island

The National Weather Service has issued a wind warning for Rhode Island.

It won't be a quiet, winter night in Rhode Island tonight. The National Weather Service out of Taunton has issued a gale warning for coastal Rhode Island as officials predict that winds will be picking up significantly in the next few hours. Gusts could top 30 knots (50 mph) along the coast and up through Narragansett Bay. Officials have issued a wind advisory for Bristol, Kent, Washington and Newport Counties from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Block Island has been issued a high wind warning for the same time period. Though these winds won't be as strong as the ones that brought an alleged tornado to North Kingstown during Tropical Storm Irene, officials are warning that these possibly damaging winds might down tree limbs and power lines.
