USA TODAY: NK Among Worst Prepared For Floods

North Kingstown is ranked in the second-worst bracket for communities that are prepared for floods.

Superstorm Sandy's wrath wreaked havoc in many coastal communities from New Jersey to New Hampshire – and exposed the undeniable truth for many that they were not prepared for the flooding that accompanied the storm.  According to USA TODAY, many cities and towns slammed by Sandy have done "little to protect themselves from flood damage, ignoring federal incentives." The article, which ran on the front page of USA TODAY on November 1, said that more than 100 municipalities in areas declared in a federal emergency following storm have been rated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as some of the worst in terms of flood preparedness in the country. Among them is North Kingstown. FEMA gives out higher ratings to communities that…

I would tend to believe NK is NOT prepared because my experience with Embury and many (not all) town employees demonstrates that Embury does not care, the employees are lazy and arrogant and there is little proaction, only reaction.   more ›

A historic home in Wickford right on the water is for sale.

Ever dreamt of living in the heart of Wickford Village? This may be the home for you then. This waterfront antique Colonial home has its own dock with access to deep water moorings and marinas in Wickford Village. Nestled in the village on the picturesque Main Street, this home is surrounded by other historic buildings.  Though it has been renovated, this home (built in 1802) still holds its character with hardwood floors, screened porch and beautiful gardens. Wickford Coming Back to Life After Flooding

Some Wickford businesses were hard hit while others remain untouched.

Things looked bleak Monday evening in Wickford Village as the historic village encountered the worst of Hurricane Sandy. Local residents and shop owners looked anxiously on as the water rose. And continued to rise. By 6 p.m. Monday, more than two hours before the projected high tide, the water had started to crest over Wickford Bridge next to Beach Rose Cafe and over Brown Street. (Click here to check out photos of the storm.) Around the same time, the North Kingstown Police Department shut down West Main Street from Wickford Package store to Brown Street due to flooding. But Tuesday morning, with the sun beating down on the village, shop owners were out sweeping sidewalks of debris and residents were walking about. Many shops in the …

From a Bride of Frankenstein to beer goggles scarecrows, the shops of Wickford Village didn't skimp on decorating their scarecrows for this year's Wicked Week display competition. This year's judges (a.k.a. "murdre of the crows), made up of local residents dressed as crows, selected a handful of winners out of the 25 scarecrows in three categories – funniest, scariest and most creative: Funniest Winner: Beauty & the Bath Scariest Winner: Green Ink Most Creative Winner:  Shaggy Chic   There is still time to visit the village and vote for your favorite scarecrow for the People's Choice Award. Voting closes on Halloween. Ballots may be found at Updike Park and at most stores. Are you a Wickford store owner? Add a picture of your scarecrow by …

Festival of Lights Returning For 27th Year

Wickford's holiday celebration will return Nov. 29 - Dec. 2.

It's not Christmas in Wickford Village without Festival of Lights. The historic village's holiday celebration returns for a 27th year, running from Nov. 29 to Dec. 2. The festival begins on Thursday, Nov. 29 with the official lighting of the tree at Updike Park, accompanied with a performance by the North Kingstown Community Youth Chorus and the Lafayette Band. Store owners across the village will also be showing off their holiday spirit with decorated storefronts, competing for the much-coveted "Best Display" contest. On Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon, Santa will arrive at Wickford's town dock via boat aboard the Sea Princess – followed by hayrides and carols throughout the village.  Many shops will have …

I love this village. However, what a sad display of lights on the Christmas tree. It looked positively awful on channel 10 news. Pathetic in fact. Not enough lights and poorly placed. Not a shining moment.   more ›

JW Graham, Customers Donate $3K to Food Pantry

JW Graham thanks its customers for helping to raise $3,117.67 for the food pantry.

In August, JW Graham kicked off its "Feed the Pantry" fundraiser – benefiting the North Kingstown Food Pantry. Throughout the month, JW Graham and Yes! Gallery offered discounts for those who donated to the pantry. Customers who donated $10 received a 10 percent off coupon; $20 for 20 percent off; and $30 for 30 percent.  This year, the food pantry was at an all-time low with the shelves nearly empty as summer vacation kicked off.

Letter: Let's Spark the Economy With Art

A Wickford gallery owner supports Sen. James Sheehan and a tax-free art district for Wickford Village.

To the editor, For over a decade I’ve owned Five Main, an art gallery in Wickford, and in recent years I’ve witnessed many local businesses downsize and close. Wickford is known as an art community and I fear that it's art galleries will be the next to go. This has inspired my thinking of ways to prevent further decline and spark new commerce. Last spring I supported Senator James Sheehan's bill (2012-S2448) to designate Wickford as a tax-exempt art district. This would have allowed Wickford's artists and galleries the same benefits provided to nine other Rhode Island communities. Although this bill was passed unanimously by the Senate, the House bill was never put on the agenda nor heard. Rhode Island is a leader in the arts and in 1998 …

Thank you Ellen for sharing this information with the community. Expanding the art district to include Wickford and the area of the Shady Lea Mill in NK is a no brainer! Sure hope our legislators make the time this session to see to it that North Kingstown is treated equitably on this issue. Sen. Whitehouse Visits Wickford Businesses

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse stopped in to Wickford Village this week to talk with local businesses.

U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse stopped in to Wickford Village for a few hours Thursday, visiting local shop owners. Whitehouse stopped in at Green Ink, Narragansett Bay Olive Oil Company, Wilson's of Wickford, Pastry Gourmet and others to talk to owners about the state of business in the area as well as their concerns. Most owners spoke of the inconsistency of business in the village. Wickford shops derive a large portion of their sales to Christmas-time shopping and largely rely on summer tourism.  According to Whitehouse's office, the senator regularly visits businesses in the state when he's not in Washington, D.C. In August, during the Senate recess, he spent a month touring jobs and businesses across the state. Though Whitehouse has …
