Wickford gallery owner Ellen Waxman believes a proposed arts bill will level the playing field.

To the editor: The arts bill will be heard this week by the House Finance Committee. What's happening now is that some towns are allowed art districts and others are not. I believe every town in Rhode Island equally deserves this opportunity. My gallery in Wickford is at a disadvantage because I have to charge my customers sales tax while galleries in other towns don't. It's difficult to compete. House bill 5844 considers every artist and gallery in Rhode Island. It gives hope and promise for all of our towns and villages, and it's fair for all. Let's restore the charm and vibrancy to all of Rhode Island, and allow every town to benefit from the revitalizing, creative energy that artists and galleries can bring. There's an enormous …

URI and North Kingstown have partnered to create a plan to cope with sea level rise.
Between the floods of March 2010 and the large-scale hurricanes that have battered New England in recent years, Rhode Island residents have gotten a glimpse into the future of sea level rise in the area. Parking lots and roads disappeared beneath storm surges while basements and storefronts flooded as water levels rose. According to Teresa Crean of the University of Rhode Island’s Coastal Resource Center, these are all indicators of what’s to come as sea levels rise. North Kingstown is at the forefront of creating a plan to mitigate its impact. Over the past century, global sea levels have increased by seven inches, threatening low-lying coastal communities. In the Northeast, the water is rising at a faster and more alarming rate. …

You voted, so here's who won!
After last month's contest to help North Kingstown Patch find a new cover photo for our Facebook page, and with the new month starting today and all, we've decided to unveil the winner. We received many amazing submissions, many of which made us happy to call North Kingstown home. We received so many great photos that we asked our readers to help us pick a frontrunner. After much debate, we've chosen our winner: Congratulations to Ted Green for his wintry photo of Wickford Village! We'll keep Ted's picture up on our Facebook page until the end of the month. Because we had so many great photos, many readers suggested we rotate. And we couldn't agree more! So, Ted's photo will hold court until the end of this month. Help us pick a photo …

Wickford Village has a new boutique.
There's a new kid on the block in Wickford Village – Elle G. Many may have stumbled upon the new boutique during this year's Festival of Lights' tree lighting, which coincidentally was opening day for Elle G's owner Lauren Greif. Though opening day saw a few "coming soon" signs on the racks as Greif waited for her inventory, the exposure during Wickford's fan-favorite holiday celebration was worth it, she said. Now more than a month after her grand opening, Greif has packed her store with everything from clutches to necklaces to sassy dresses and jackets. Though Elle G is located right next to Gossip Boutique, Greif feels the two shops complement and can work off of each other. "We're two boutiques that cater to the female population, …

The NK Zoning Board denied an application for a Dunkin' Donuts outside Wickford Village.
There won’t be a Dunkin’ Donuts in Wickford, at least for now. The North Kingstown Zoning Board of Review denied an application that would have brought a Dunkin’ Donuts to the corner of Phillips Street and Tower Hill Road. Thirteen residents of the more than 50 present at Tuesday night’s meeting vehemently spoke out against the project. The applicants, Theresa Amaral and Robert and David Batista, were seeking to build a 3,000 sq. ft. building on the half-acre lot. Half the building would be a Dunkin’ Donuts (without drive-through service) while the other half would be a business to be determined. Residents and members of both the zoning board and North Kingstown Planning Commission (which gave the project an unfavorable recommendation in…
Help us compile our list of the top gifts you can only find in North Kingstown.
With Thanksgiving behind us, we're now in full-tilt, holiday shopping mode. For those who don't want to venture outside the town lines and would rather support local businesses, North Kingstown Patch is once again putting together our "5 Gotta-Get Gifts in NK" list. I'll be heading out to do "research" (also known as retail therapy) this week, searching for unique gifts you can only find in North Kingstown. Last year, we featured the Coffee Cuff from Updike's Newtowne Coffee and gourmet olive oil sample packs from Narragansett Bay Olive Oil Company, among others. Before I head out on my quest for the coolest gifts in NK, I'm seeking input from North Kingstown's residents and business owners. If you know of a really unique gift idea that …

This project is bringing detailed data to residents of North Kingstown that will help us chart a path forward. I would urge all who can to attend the session at the Library to do so, so we can begin the process of incorporating needed changes into our plans for the future. Rising sea levels, more storms, changing climate zones for plants, changes in bay temperatures and acidity, and other effects…   more ›
