[CHAT] URI vs. St. Bonaventure, The Blizzard Bowl

In what’s sure to be a sparsely attended game, the Rams host St. Bonaventure at 7 p.m.

KINGSTON – Join me on tonight’s live chat and keep me company, since it’s likely there won’t be many people actually at the Ryan Center as the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team (6-15, 1-7 Atlantic 10) hosts St. Bonaventure (10-11, 3-5 Atlantic 10). This game mirrors a contest between URI and Fairfield a few years ago, in which about 500 hardy fans made it into the Ryan Center to watch the game, thanks to 20 inches of snow outside. While plows have been out most of the day in Rhode Island, the roads are still a mess, and almost all of Washington County and Aquidneck Island are still without power. Both factors will surely depress attendance. But hey, if you’re inside and have power, or have a working smart phone, follow along…

[VIDEO] Late St. Bonaventure Run Tames Rams

A dagger 3-point shot from Eric Mosley with 22 seconds puts the Bonnies up by four and sinks the Rams.

KINGSTON – University of Rhode Island head coach Danny Hurley wasn’t shy when sharing his thoughts on this year’s team and the future following a 67-61 loss to St. Bonaventure. “This is never happening to me again,” he said of the team’s 6-16 mark, and 1-8 record in Atlantic 10 play. “This will never happen again, I know that.” What happened Saturday night was a Rams’ team that faded in the second half and down the stretch again. A six-point halftime lead turned into a six-point deficit at the end, thanks to a St. Bonaventure team that only turned the ball over twice. In contrast, URI got easy buckets in the first half on 10 St. Bonaventure turnovers and in transition. With those opportunities gone, the Rams struggled, shooting just 33.3 …

[VIDEO] URI Fades Against VCU

Rhody struggles to score in the second half, falling behind by as many as 15, before rallying and falling short against VCU.

Thanks to a cold snap in the second half, the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team couldn’t keep up with Virginia Commonwealth, falling 70-64 on Wednesday night. A late run by Rhody (6-13, 1-5 Atlantic 10) made the final a bit closer, as VCU (17-5, 5-2 Atlantic 10) struggled to put URI away. VCU led by 15 points with four minutes remaining. Three-point shots by Xavier Munford, Andre Malone and T.J. Buchanan got URI as close as five in the final two minutes, but VCU hit enough free throws down the stretch to win. However, a usual malady struck URI in the second half, as Rhody went long stretches without scoring. After just seven first half turnovers, the press wore URI down, as they committed 11 in the second half. URI’s …

[CHAT] Rams Face Rams Again

URI looks to recover from a loss at Fordham by upsetting VCU at home.

For the second straight game, the Rams take on the Rams, although this time, the Rams will hope for a better outcome against the Rams. On Saturday, the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball game lost 66-65 at Fordham. (Or, depending on what account of the game you read, maybe it was 66-63.) Andre Malone led URI (6-12, 1-4 Atlantic 10) with 12 points, but leading scorer Xavier Munford struggled, scoring just 10 points on 3-for-13 shooting. URI will host Virginia Commonwealth University at 7 p.m., with VCU (16-5, 4-2 Atlantic) looking to bounceback from a 69-61 loss at home. The loss knocked VCU out of the Top 25 rankings, from their spot of No. 19.

[VIDEO] 49ers Outwork Rams On Boards For Victory

Thanks to a 45 to 25 advantage in rebounding, Charlotte wears the Rams down in the second half for a 58-50 win.

KINGSTON – The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team had no answer for Charlotte on the glass, as the 49ers used double-digit rebounding advantages in both halves to wear down the Rams for a 58-50 win. After a half, the Rams trailed Charlotte in rebounding 22-11, but held a 31-30 lead thanks to 52.4 percent shooting. However, as the Rams cooled off, the 49ers kept up the intensity on the boards, finishing with a 45-25 advantage over URI in rebounding. Burly 6’8” Charlotte forward Willie Clayton led the way with 11 points and 13 rebounds, and 6’4” guard Pierria Henry also had 10 boards. DeMario Mayfield came off the bench to lead Charlotte with 17 points, as leading scorer Chris Braswell struggled with fouls and played just 23 …

[VIDEO] Rams Edge Bears In Battle of Max Defense

In a miserable offensive game for both teams, the Rams are a bit less worse than the Bears, and win 59-47.

KINGSTON – The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team awoke from a deep shooting slump just enough in the second half to pull away from the Brown Bears, 59-47, on Friday night. Xavier Munford scored 14 of his 18 in the second half, finishing with the team and game-high. The Bears fouled liberally down the stretch, which allowed Rhody guard Mike Powell to finish with 16 points, 9-of-12 from the line. The teams crawled out to a 21-14 football score at the half, with URI (5-8) holding the advantage. Except for a brief stretch in the second half that Munford dominated, and the final three minutes as Brown (4-8) gave fouls, neither team got into much of a rhythm. At the half, Brown was shooting 25 percent from the field. This dipped …

[CHAT] Brown vs. URI Tonight for Governor’s Cup

The Brown Bears have a rare chance at the Governor’s Cup, if they can upset the Rams on Friday night.

After a surprising upset of Providence College, the Brown University Bears have a chance at the Governor’s Cup in men’s basketball for the first time since 2006. Standing in their way will be the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team, as the Rams look to avoid being upset like the Friars were last week. The game is at 7 p.m. at the Ryan Center. Last Friday, the Bears shocked the Friars 69-68 at home with a 3-pointer from Tucker Halpren with 7.3 seconds left. For a recap from Brown Athletics, click here. The game was the first since 1982 between the Friars and Brown at a true home site for the Bears. Last Friday’s game was played at the Pizzitola Sports Center, as opposed to the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Following the game with …
