NK's Water Thirst Difficult to Quench
Officials and volunteers reach out to educate users, change behavior, and ensure a steady supply for new homes and businesses
Domenic Passarella, a sprinkler professional with Frank Passarella Inc. in North Kingstown, finds it ironic that some blame in-ground sprinklers for the town's summertime surge in water demand that can double the daily gallons pumped. While studies by the town water department show that excessive outdoor lawn watering does cause that surge, Passarella says a properly set sprinkler with a mandatory rain sensor can actually limit water usage. This summer, he set the sprinkler at his Davisville home to water the grass every four days. "It looked fine," he said. "It's not that underground sprinklers over-water.
