When do you start decorating for Christmas?
Christmas music is already being played around the clock on the radio and at least several North Kingstown residents have already "decked the halls." A few readers and some friends have informed me that they've seen neighbors putting up their Christmas lights and other holiday decorations already. While we applaud their enthusiasm for the holidays, we want to know when you plan to dig the Christmas boxes out of the attic. Do you wait until the day after Thanksgiving or the week before? Tell us in the comments section below!
Thanksgiving is the perfect time to grab those beach buckets you just stashed away--unless, of course, you use an imaginary one!
As the mother of eight, if I’ve done the calculations correctly, I’ve attended more than 65 open houses to date at the beginning of each new school year. These events are certainly status quo but are also pivotal landmarks of how quickly time passes in our young children’s lives. One moment we are oohing and ahhing at the self-portraits they’ve created in kindergarten, and in no time at all we’re listening to their high school teacher explain the importance of molecular geometry configurations predicted using VSEPR theory. (I’ll take the kindergarten open houses any day of the week!) It’s not that I don’t enjoy open houses, but because I’ve gone to so many, sadly most are now just a blur. (Sorry, don’t mean to sound so callous!) This …

Rhode Island's blue laws don't allow much to open today. Here's a look at what's open and closed.
If you haven't stocked up on supplies for today, you may need to borrow from neighbors. Most businesses in Rhode Island are closed today thanks to blue laws established by the Puritans in the 1600s and still followed in Rhode Island today. One of the old laws prohibits stores from doing business on Thansgiving Day. Here's a look at what's open and closed for today:

Here are 5 Things to know for today, Nov. 23.
1. Today is the busiest travel day of the year, and the weather is expected to cooperate. About 42.5 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, up for the third straight year and a four percent increase from the 40.9 million people who traveled one year ago, according to AAA Southern New England. The vast majority of travelers — 90 percent — will be taking to the roadways as 38.2 milllion people are expected to cram Ameri a's highways, AAA said. Theroughout the east coast, that couple be a problem for many as a huge storm is expected to bring heavy rain and winds to much of the eastern seaboard. This storm is expected to make travel difficult — even dangerous — up and down the east …

The Ten Rod Ramblers rocked out for a good cause.
The sounds of Bob Dylan, Neil Young and others filled the halls of Beechwood Center Sunday for a "folk rockin' concert" to benefit the North Kingstown Food Pantry. The Ten Rod Ramblers, a local folk rock band fronted by North Kingstown's superintendent of schools Dr. Phil Auger, provided musical entertainment as locals danced and toe-tapped the afternoon away. In all, the first-year fundraiser netted $500 in donations and a truckload of food for the pantry. It all started when North Kingstown Town Councilman Charles Brennan received word from the town manager that the bandstand by the town beach was nearing completion. Looking to give the bandstand an autumn kick-off, Brennan began to organize a benefit concert for the food pantry. …

David Letterman isn't the only one who can create a top ten list: I did, and so can you. Thanksgiving is in the air. Don't just think about gobbling--how about some original reasons that you are grateful this year?
This is the time of year when the focus is on gratitude and giving thanks. Certainly there are many who do this all year round, but for those who wait for a 20 lb. stuffed turkey to do so, there’s no time like the present to create your “Top Ten Reasons To Be Thankful” this year. Personally, my 10 combined could easily be my family, but that’s a given 99.9 percent of the time, so after reflecting long and hard, I’ve decided I’m giving thanks to those people and items that make my life a lot more manageable: So I wish you all a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving and perhaps you’ll take some time to jot down your Top Ten Reasons to be Thankful this year—when you’re done, I hope you’ll feel as great as I do right now.
