Nicholas Whitely has been sentenced to three years in prison and three at home.
The North Kingstown man has been sentenced to three years in prison and another three years of home confinement after changing his plea from not guilty to no contest in the drunken-driving crash that killed two North Kingstown teenagers last year, according to the Providence Journal. On Feb. 19, 2012, Nicholas Whiteley – now 22 years old – was behind the wheel of a truck carrying 19-year-old Michael Ruggieri and 18-year-old Madeline Healey down Shippeetown Road in East Greenwich. Whiteley, who was under the influence at the time of the crash, reportedly lost control of the vehicle and struck a telephone pole, killing both Ruggieri and Healey. Nicholas Whiteley of North Kingstown and Patrick Gronhagen were arraigned at the Kent County Courthouse Thursday morning.
Two men charged in last month's fatal accident on Shippeetown Road in East Greenwich appeared in court today for their arraignment, WJAR-TV reported. Nicholas Whiteley, 21, of North Kingstown — the driver of one truck involved in the accident Feb 19 at about 4 a.m. — appeared before the judge wearing a sling and neck brace. Whiteley was thrown from the vehicle and was in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital before being downgraded and released. He is being charged with multiple felonies, including two charges of driving under the influence — death resulting. The driver in the crash that killed two teenagers Feb. 19 and the driver of a second vehicle both face charges.
East Greenwich police are charging two drivers in connection with the crash on Shippeetown Road Feb. 19 that left two teenagers dead. Nicholas Whiteley, 21, of Lafayette Road in North Kingstown, driver of the truck that overturned and split a utility poll in two, will face five charges, including two charges of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, death resulting. Patrick Gronhagen, 21, of Tillinghast Drive in East Greenwich, faces four counts of driving to endanger, according to police. Police said Whiteley was trying to overtake the truck driven by Gronhagen at the time of the accident.
