VIDEO: Full Steam Ahead For Wickford Junction

The MBTA commuter rail is officially running out of Wickford Junction.

Despite the cold, damp and blustery weather, hundreds came out Monday for the grand opening of the long-awaited commuter rail station at Wickford Junction. A ceremonial first train left Providence Monday morning, bound for Wickford Junction and carrying Gov. Lincoln Chafee, Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse and Jack Reed, Reps. James Langevin and David Cicilline and more. Many passengers on the train were friends of Bob Cioe, the man behind the dream of bringing rail service back to Wickford. The journey has been a long one for Cioe, owner of the Wickford Junction plaza, who bought the land 30 years ago. Gathering in the four-story parking garage at Wickford Junction, the crowd heard remarks from the governor, the congressional delegation, Rhode …

Great but to make this worth it we need weekend service to pvd and Boston and late night. For events like water fire, new years, sox games, etc. If it extends to Kingston URI students as well could take train to PVd and perhaps with late night service less drunks driving on the roads.   more ›

In what Salazar called a “major milestone,” the federal government is calling for letters of interest within the next 45 days from those wanting to develop wind farms off the coast of Rhode Island. Salazar made the announcement Wednesday morning in a press conference  at Quonset’s Compass Rose Beach with members of the state’s congressional delegation and the governor. Gov. Chafee, Federal Delegation Discuss Future Of Kingston Station

Conference marks the first time the governor and the entire federal delegation have met in South Kingstown in more than 10 years.

KINGSTON - Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee joined the state’s entire congressional delegation in Kingston Friday morning for the first time since the 1990s to celebrate the awarding of $25 million for station improvements designed to speed Amtrak service through the town. “We have to have a competitive edge,” Chafee said. “Every second counts when it comes up against air travel.” Chafee stressed that the timekeeping improvements of this and another federally-funded project at Wickford Junction will help cut time for rail commutes, help to improve the station’s handicap accessibility, and make rail travel more convenient for Rhode Islanders. Chafee also praised the hard work of the state’s federal delegation in securing funds after the…
