School Committee Names New Finance Director

Finance chief for the East Providence School System succeeds Ned Draper, with an annual salary or $110,000

At its March 27 meeting, the North Kingstown School Committee approved a contract with Mary King to oversee school finances as director of administrative services. King will succeed Ned Draper, who recently took a position at the Rhode Island School of Design. King's two-year contract carries an annual salary of $110,000, which is more than Draper earned. School Superintendent Phil Auger said that King has a master's degree and is a Chartered Public Accountant, qualifications that exceed Draper's. He added that King currently earns $115,000 per year as director of finance at the East Providence School Department. Auger said that the contract includes provisions that allow either King or the North Kingstown School Department to terminate it…

DMS Bond Vote Set for April 3

Schools Business Director Ned Draper departs for a new job as North Kingstown School Committee grapples with current and future budget challenges

A date has been set and voters will hit the polls on April 3 to decide the fate of a $6.4 million bond to repair the failing roof at Davisville Middle School and make repairs to other schools mandated by state or federal law. School Superintendent Phil Auger announced the date of the bond request vote at the Feb. 28 North Kingstown School Committee meeting. Auger said it is crucial that the roof work take place this summer, and the committee approved a $38,700 contract for architect and engineering services to be carried out by Rowse Architects of Providence. That recommendation will be forwarded to Town Manager Michael Embury for immediate action. According to school officials, the town manager has asked that all contracting for the …

Good luck Coach Gilmartin! FYI - I thought NK beat EG at least! I'm glad some of the folks who take some heat for being "pushy" about cost saving prevailed instead of just rubber stamping the $2.9M original estimate on the roof. We'll see what this firm finds, but I suspect the $40K investment is going to show the roof will cost *far less* than $2.9M -- so what is the plan or intent for the "…   more ›

School Committee Discusses Budget, Roof Woes

School Committee plans preliminary studies so work can proceed on schedule, but members worry about the fate of the upcoming bond request

With a slew of unanimous votes, the North Kingstown School Committee (absent Lynda Avanzato, Melvoid Benson and Bill Mudge) approved its routine items and most of the consent agenda with little discussion. Despite the relatively smooth meeting, the committee hit some speed bumps – namely ongoing budget challenges, next year's budget, and how to pay for infrastructure repairs, including the Davisville Middle School roof. During Citizens Comments, Richard August said that the budget passed Feb. 7 is unrealistic because there is no way that the schools will receive a 4 percent increase from the town, which faces budget problems of its own. August said that the approved schools’ budget actually reflects increases over this year's budget, and …

NK School Committee OKs $58.7 Million School Budget for 2012-13

Provisions include reducing, reorganizing and retiring more teachers and other staff, and assumes Town Council will raise school funding by 4 percent

Faced with shrinking revenue and rising costs, the North Kingstown School Committee on Tuesday reduced its original plans and approved a $58,532,487 budget for fiscal year 2013, which begins in July. The budget, prepared by School Superintendent Phil Auger and his staff, assumes North Kingstown will raise local taxes by the maximum legally allowed of 4 percent and will raise its contribution to the school budget by an equal percentage. Auger said that because most of the school budget is governed by contracts and other legal provisions with built-in cost increases, the approved budget nevertheless requires $1.4 million in cuts. Among them: reducing or eliminating some teaching, library, and other staff jobs, including a savings of $431,846…

NK Town Council Will Be Asked to Pay for School Roof

School Committee wants to tap the town's $9 million surplus for the Davisville Middle School roof and reduce the upcoming bond request by $2 million.

Davisville Middle School’s roof has been leaking for years and, according to the North Kingstown School Committee, the responsibility to remedy the problem lies with the North Kingstown Town Council.  "No child needs to sit in a school building with rain falling on them," said Melvoid Benson. According to discussion during Tuesday night’s committee meeting, the town stopped making contributions to school capital projects several years ago. Since then, the town has amassed excess tax revenues – $1 million last year, according to school committee member Larry Ceresi – into a “rainy day” fund. The empty capital improvement program (CIP) fund is forcing the School Committee to ask voters to approve a $6.4 million bond request for the roof and …

UPDATED: NK School Bus Drivers Offered 5-Year Contract

School Committee tells athletics department, "Show me the money," asking for details on how sports will cut $30,000 and approving RFP to seek more activity-related advertising -- and Jamestown students will keep arriving next year

An earlier version of this article contained the incorrect length of the NKBCA contract. The North Kingstown School Committee approved a five-year contract with the North Kingstown Bus Contractors Association to transport students Tuesday night. School Attorney Mary Ann Carroll said the terms remain confidential until the contract is approved by NKBCA. But, NKBCA President Paul Mumford said after the meeting that he had already discussed the contract with his members and they would accept it. "It's a done deal," he said. The approval came on a 4-0 vote late in the evening after an executive session to discuss the contract and after school committee members Richard Welch and Joe Thompson had left. (Larry Ceresi was absent.) Lynda Avanzato …

School Committee Approves Hiring Assistant Superintendent

Group debates teacher pension reform, electronic communication, Davisville Elementary School and miniature horses trudging through classrooms

Michele Humbyrd, principal of Curtis Corner Middle School in South Kingstown, received a special North Kingstown welcome Oct. 25 as the North Kingstown School Committee approved her appointment to the post of NK assistant school superintendent. Lynda Avanzato announced that not only would Humbyrd receive a salary more than two percent lower than her predecessor, Superintendent Phil Auger, but she also had volunteered not to enroll in the school health insurance plan, saving the system thousands of dollars. William Mudge congratulated Humbyrd, but said he wished the committee had discussed the qualifications required to oversee the technology department, which was added to the assistant superintendent's job description, before making a …

With a school budget running a "potential" deficit, I question the wisdom of expanding the administration. Granted, the assistant Supt. position may have been vacant, but to save money in these challenging times, it should have been left that way. School districts have long been tacking on assistants positions for various reasons, usually to satisfy the needs of RIDE. They take on the looks of a …   more ›

Richard Welch Stepping Down As School Committee Chair

With the 2011-2012 budget gap closed, committee votes to request proposals on outsourcing food services for 2012-13.

The North Kingstown School Committee started Tuesday on a relaxed note, with members attending a reception in the North Kingstown High School cafeteria to honor retiring teachers and staff. Things then turned somber. After the Pledge of Allegiance, Vice Chair Kimberly Page, who was presiding, had a moment of silence to remember former committee member Douglas Roth, who died last weekend. During roll call she announced that absent committee member William Mudge is recovering from a heart attack. Then Richard Welch, declaring, "I did not seek this job," announced he is resigning as School Committee chair, effective at the June 28 meeting. He will continue to serve as a committee member. Welch, who was elected chair early this year in a …

Richard I should have been clearer in my answers, I don't think the whole SC is acting poorly, only a select few, but there are quite a few so it really drags the whole thing down. Benson Mudge and to a lesser degree Thompson just don't seem to be all there mentally, and want to bicker and argue for the whole time. School Committee Lops $245,000 From Upcoming Budget

Sports, custodians, clerks and other areas still face cuts to make up the remaining $617,000 deficit

Faced with an unappetizing array of possible budget cuts, members of the North Kingstown School Committee chewed over virtually every suggestion on the menu before finally swallowing a few at last night's meeting. With the North Kingstown Town Council’s decision provide schools with no additional funds from recently passed property tax increases, Superintendent Phil Thornton had prepared a list of potential reductions to the department's 2011-2012 budget. About half of the needed $862,000 came from trimming planned increases and half from cutting existing programs and services. After three rounds of voting, the committee approved route changes that would eliminate the need for one school bus, saving $50,000 for the year; not replacing a …

NK WATCH, I don't see what your beef is.
