What Goes Around, Comes Around

DOT officials are proposing a roundabout at Route 2 and 102.

Everything’s cyclical – even roadway designs. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is proposing building a roundabout at the Route 2 and 102 intersection, west of Route 4, and including the driveway to Oatley's Restaurant. If this plan sounds familiar, it should: North Kingstown was home to two roundabouts on Ten Road Road (Route 102) in 1980s. According to Town Councilor Chuck Brennan (a former North Kingstown police officer), the roundabouts were taken out about 25 years ago once Route 4 was built.  More than two decades later, the DOT is proposing a roundabout once again in an effort to curb car accidents at the intersection. According to a report presented to the North Kingstown Town Council on Monday night, there have been 46…

What is being proposed is not "your father's rotary." Modern roundabout design differs significantly from the three old Rt. 2 rotaries we used to know and hate in North Kingstown, two of which were located about a mile apart at the two intersections of Rt. 102 and Rt. 2, with the third one situated a few miles further south down Rt. 2 at the Rt. 138 intersection. These things were incredibly …   more ›

Visioning Group to Study Route 2/102 Intersection

A stakeholder group will now begin to study the contentious intersection.

The North Kingstown Town Council approved a $54,135 “visioning process” to study a controversial area of town – the intersection of Route 2 and 102 where a village center development has been proposed. The study will be conducted by a stakeholder group made up of a mixture of neighboring residents, business owners in the area and conservationists. The council cut the number of voting stakeholders from 16 to 11.  (See below for the current roster for this stakeholders group.) The group will study the area and find a consensus for what should happen to the area in the future. Aside from the 11 members, there will be several ad hoc members – two from the Exeter Planning Department, two from the North Kingstown Planning Department and …

Have a Vision for Route 2 & 102?

What would you like to see happen to the Route 2 and 102 area?

The Town of North Kingstown is looking for input from the community and stakeholders regarding the future of the Route 2 and Route intersection 102 – one of the most controversial and contentious areas in town. The North Kingstown Planning Department is kicking off its visioning process for the area with the help of the Consensus Building Institute (CBI), a non-profit mediation and facilitation organization based in Massachusetts. The town is looking to create a scope and design process for a stakeholder group to work together on the topic. Ona Ferguson of CBI has interviewed more than a dozen neighbors, business owners, town officials and other stakeholders, gathering information ranging from current zoning to what the community hopes to …
