State Lawmakers Propose Casino at Quonset [poll]

Rep. John Carnevale and Rep. Joseph Trillo are proposing a casino at Quonset Point.

Quonset Point hosts one of the largest defense contractors in the country and the second largest auto importer on the East Coast, but it may become home to a new casino. The Associated Press is reporting that Rep. John Carnevale (D-Providence) and Rep. Joseph Trillo (R-Warwick) are drafting a proposal to build a casino at the former naval base in North Kingstown, looking to boost the state's economy and create a tourist attraction. According to Carnevale, Quonset's nearby highways, an airport and a deep-water port able to accommodate cruise ships make it a favorable location. Carnevale and Trillo are now finalizing the details of their plan. The proposal comes amidst the casino debate in Massachusetts, after the state authorized up to …

Quonset Airport Looking for Fresh 'Take-Off'

Under new management, the Providence Jet Center (formerly the Quonset State Airport) is looking to attract new business.

Quonset Point may have closed down nearly four decades ago, but planes are still flying in and out of the former naval base. Wednesday night marked the open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony for Providence Jet Center, formerly known as the Quonset State Airport. AvPORTS, which took over operations of the Quonset airport along with the state’s other four smaller airports from Landmark Aviation in July, is looking to provide a much different experience for pilots, crews and passengers than before. “From the time you taxi up, someone will be waiting there to help you,” said Darren Betters, transitional manager with AvPORTS. The airport infuses concierge service into its customer service, ranging from arranging catering, car rentals, …

Okeanos Becomes North Kingstown's Newest Resident [video]

The deep-sea exploration vessel will call North Kingstown home for the next decade.

Past the sea of Porsches, Audis and other vehicles along Davisville Road, Quonset welcomed its newest tenant to the Port of Davisville – the Okeanos Explorer. The 224-foot vessel is National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminstration’s (NOAA) newest ship and is one of the most technologically advanced in the country, designed to investigate and explore the deepest portions of the ocean floor. Since its commission in 2009, the vessel has mapped areas of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans and even discovered a new vent field in the Galapagos area. Starting this month, Okeanos will call the Port of Davisville home for the next decade. Dr. Jane Lubchenco, an administrator with NOAA, described the Okeanos as “nation’s first vessel and only …

Lowe's To Close NK Store; 110 To Lose Jobs

The Davisville Road location is expected to shut its doors in about a month.

More than 100 people will likely lose their jobs after Lowe’s Companies, Inc. announced Monday it is closing the North Kingstown store. The Davisville Road location is expected to shut its doors in about 4 weeks, after employees finish cataloging the store's inventory, according to Steve Salazar, a spokesman in the company's Moorseville, N.C. headquarters. Some of the 110 employees will be offered positions in other Lowe's stores. The remainder will be laid off with a severance package that includes 60 days of pay and benefits, Salazar said. Nationwide, nearly 2,000 employees will be affected. The NK site, which opened in January 2009, is among 20 Lowe's locations the company has decided to shutter, citing low performance. "The stores that…

I am one of those unfortunate employees at Lowe's in North Kingstown that closed. I will agree that the location of the store wasn't exactly ideal and perhaps a better, more visible spot would have made the difference. Here's the thing though, after it was announced via television, radio, etc... that the store would be closing we were packed with shoppers. Percentage discounts were never …   more ›
