The Rhode Island delegation announced that Quonset Business Park will receive $6 million to make upgrades and repairs following Hurricane Irene.
More than a year after Hurricane Irene whipped through the area, Quonset Business Park is getting some financial assistance from the federal government. U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, U.S. Representatives James Langevin and Cicilline and Gov. Lincoln Chafee announced on Monday that the business park and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation would receive $6 million in federal funding to make upgrades and repairs related to storm damage from Hurricane Irene, which whipped through the area in August 2011. The funds will go toward rebuilding Quonset's Zarbo Avenue Bulkhead which protects three marine trades industry businesses from waterfront storm surges. Seventy years after the bulkhead was built, it sustained …

1610 Davisville Road was just a vacant dirt lot back in January. Eight months later, it's now home to the state's newest indoor sports facility. (Oh, and WiFi.) The facility is a sister site to the original WWIS in Smithfield, offering youth and adult leagues for a variety of sports (including soccer, flag football, wiffleball, lacrosse and more), tournaments and corporate events. At Wednesday's grand opening, one thing was unanimous among the slew of speakers – WWIS journey to Quonset was a team effort. According …

Will Quonset become home to a "super" casino?
If Rhode Island gets a super casino, chances are it won't be in Quonset. In an interview this week with WPRO, Quonset Development Corporation's spokesperson David Preston said the likelihood of "super" casino in the business park is highly unlikely. "The consensus seemed to be there is so many things going on and there would be so much disruption to so many successful businesses there that Quonset probably isn't the place to do that," said Preston. Officials began to eye Quonset as a potential host to a casino after Massachusetts approved three casinos late last year. State Rep. Joseph Trillo (R-Warwick) proposed that Quonset Point was the perfect spot for a "world-class casino" that could compete with the upcoming Massachusetts casinos in…

The Port of Davisville has moved up in the rankings and is now the seventh largest auto importer in North America.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee announced that the Port of Davisville has moved up and is now the seventh largest auto importer in North America. Based on 2011 figures, 150,000 vehicles were imported via the port while another 41,000 came by rail. Located inside the Quonset Business Park, the port was initially used by the military during World War II and is the original home to the Navy’s Construction Battalion — more commonly known as the Seabees. “The Port of Davisville — as well as the entire Quonset Business Park — is one of Rhode Island’s key assets,” said Chafee. “Last year’s results put us ahead of Boston, Halifax, Philadelphia, Norfolk, Charlestown, Seattle — among others — as one of the premier auto ports on the continent.” Most vehicles …

The governor and other officials broke ground on a new indoor sports facility, coming to Quonset Business Park.
Quonset's newest resident may make the excuse "there's nothing to do in North Kingstown" invalid. Gov. Lincoln Chafee, state officials and members of the business community welcomed Wide World of Indoors Sports to the Quonset Gateway Thursday afternoon in a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony. "This is great for the kids because these days they come home and start texting," said Stephen Sangermano, owner of Wide World of Indoor Sports. "They don't have a lot of ways to release their energy." The 76,000 sq. ft. facility will be located behind the former Lowe's building on Davisville Road in the Quonset Business Park. Programs for soccer, field hockey, flag football, lacrosse, softball, volleyball, wiffleball and more will be offered for …

Twelve state legislators are proposing that the ports at Davisville and Providence could become hubs for cargo barges.
A dozen state legislators are recommending the ports of Davisville and Providence could take larger roles in the East Coast shipping industry. A Port Commission of state representatives released a report Tuesday, suggesting that the two Rhode Island parts could become destinations for cargo barges if shipping lanes are properly dredged. The commission recommends that the state issue roughly $7.5 million bonds to dredge Davisville and the shipping lane between Quonset and Jamestown. According to the report, Rhode Island (which once hosted one of the most prosperous commercial centers in colonial times and grew once again during World War II) has "fallen well behind" other states along the Atlantic coast in terms of port and maritime …

Is there room in Quonset for a world-class casino?
Quonset Point may be the ideal spot for a world-class casino in the eyes of Rep. Joseph Trillo (R-Warwick), but the numbers may speak differently. A former Naval base, Quonset Business Park boasts 3,207 acres of land. However, only 468 acres are available for development and 166 of that is either preserved, under option or under negotiation. (Click here to view a map of availability in Quonset Business Park as of June 2011.) “Quonset is a busy place that is getting crowded, and so that will create some challenges,” said Quonset Development Corporation spokesperson David Preston. No detailed plans or legislation have been presented on a proposal for a casino in Quonset Point. Preston estimates developers would need about 175 acres of land…

Rep. Joseph Trillo (R-Warwick) and Rep. John Carnevale (D-Providence) are proposing a casino for Quonset Point.
According to state Rep. Joseph Trillo (R-Warwick), Quonset is the perfect spot for a “world class casino.” He hopes that together with Rep. John Carnevale (D-Johnston, Providence), he will be able to garner enough support to present a bill allowing a casino at Quonset. Trillo said that Sen. Frank Ciccone (D-Providence, North Providence) is interested in sponsoring the bill in the Senate. “When Massachusetts builds its three casinos - which they will do - we’re going to lose money,” Trillo said in an interview Wednesday night. “It’s not a question of whether you want gambling or don’t want gambling — gambling is here.” According to Trillo, Quonset’s deep-water port can accommodate up to four cruise ships at a time. That, together the …
