Power Restored to North Kingstown

Only a handful of customers are without power in town.

Three days after the snow stopped falling from the Blizzard of 2013, nearly all of North Kingstown has power back.  According to National Grid's power outage map, 16 customers in North Kingstown are still waiting for power as of noon Tuesday. At this time yesterday, about 1,400 of North Kingstown's 13,000 customers were still without power. More than 900 customers in Washington County are also without power at this time. In public statements, a National Grid spokesperson had said most of the state would have power restored by Sunday night, though many in North Kingstown had to wait until Monday night for power to return. At the height of the storm, power was knocked out to more than 9,000 customers in North Kingstown.    Have photos …

UPDATE: Power Outages Jump to 7,400 in NK

Reports of power outages are starting to come in across the state.

Update, 7:55 p.m. –  Power outages in North Kingstown have jumped to 7,410 – nearly 57 percent of residents. Across the state, more than 108,000 National Grid customers are without power. Update - 7:32 p.m.: National Grid reports repair crews will have to take a renewed stab at restoring power in North Kingstown and other areas tomorrow morning after the worst of the storm has passed.  Charlotte McCormack, spokesperson for National Grid, said that crews were taken in hours ago after winds reached speeds greater than 30 mph. Crews have been focused on any work that could be done without putting staff up in the utility's bucket trucks, "specifically for safety reasons," McCormack said.  She said according to reports, the damage was caused by…

UPDATED: Roughly 2,500 Without Power in NK, Exeter

According to the National Grid, nearly 2,500 customers are without power in South County.

Approximately 2,500 customers are without power Thursday afternoon in Exeter and North Kingstown, according to the National Grid. About 1,850 customers in Exeter and another 700 in North Kingstown lost power around 12:30 p.m., said David Graves of National Grid. The source of the power outage was reportedly a failed switching device on a connection that runs along the North Kingstown-Exeter line. The National Grid's Power Outage Map indicates the outage stretches along Ten Rod Road/Route 102 from Old Baptist Road in North Kingstown all the way into Exeter just east of Route 3. The area abuts the North Kingstown-East Greenwich line to the north and stretches as far south as Exeter Road and Mail Road in Exeter. According to Graves, power …

Poll: Should Utility Companies Rebate Customers for Power Outages?

A Massachusetts legislator wants customers to get paid when they don't have power.

A Massachusetts legislator is urging passage of a new law that would force utility companies to rebate customers when there are extended outages. State Rep. Daniel Winslow (R-Norfolk, MA) has asked the Massachusetts House Rules Committee to take action on a power outage rebate bill. According to a release from Winslow's office reported on Wrentham Patch, the bill would require rebates to customers who go without power for more than eight hours. The rebate would be for two days of their average bill for each day the customer is without power. The move is prompted by the Halloween weekend storm that knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of customers throughout Massachusetts, just two months after Tropical Storm Irene knocked out power …

In general, in the case of an "act of God" that's out of the power company's control - and given the fact that the meter is not running when the power is out - one would say an emphatic "no" - that the power company need not pay customers when they're not using or being charged for electricity. That being said, part of what our utility bills pay for is to have line workers available when the …   more ›

Grade the Grid

Power is restored to nearly all of North Kingstown. So how well did National Grid do after the storm?

Nearly 344,000 Rhode Islanders were without power after Tropical Storm Irene slammed into southern New England Sunday. Five days after the storm, that figure has now dropped to about 28,000. With 1,200 North Kingstown residents still without power on Friday afternoon, how would you grade National Grid's job performance after Irene? Are you impressed by the work they've done or incensed? Do they deserve an A? B? C? D? F? Sound off in the comments below.

Hmmm, this is a tough one. From a big picture perspective, I would give them a C /B-. NG did an okay job communicating prior to the storm, during the storm throughout the entire region, and the afterwards during recovery. Inefficiencies blatantly exist though. In talking with NG repair crews, I found that none had a good perspective on what was going on. When NG has employees going door to door …   more ›
