Phase Two of Sewer Project Stalled

Without a location for a pump station, phase two of the North Kingstown sewer project is stalled.

The future of North Kingstown sewer project hangs in limbo as town officials search for the location of a crucial pump station. According to Town Manager Michael Embury, the challenge has been finding a suitable location for a pump station that is necessary to complete phase two of the sewer project. Phase two, a $9.2-million project approved by voters in 2010, spans from Dana Drive (near the West Bay Family YMCA) down to the Rhode Island State Police Wickford Barracks. Phase one, which includes Post Road from Dana Drive up to Camp Avenue and a portion of Camp Avenue, is expected to be completed early during the 2013 construction season. Initially, the town was looking to locate the pump station at the Wickford Barracks. After months of no…

In the local paper, Mr. Embury stated the SP reneged on the allowing the pumping station. Did Mr. Embury have a signed Tentative deal with the SP? Hell of a way to run a railroad, not securing the a vital piece of the project. Another poor job from 80 Boston Neck.   more ›

Night Work to Continue on Post Road, Camp Ave. for Three Weeks

An update on sewer construction.

North Kingstown has a few more weeks of construction ahead of it as crews work to finish installing sewers. Night work at the intersection of Post Road and Camp Avenue started this past week, with alternating one-lane traffic for several nights. Work will continue on Post Road from Camp Avenue down to Dana Road (next to the YMCA) for the next three weeks, according to an advisory from the town manager's office. Night work starts at 6 p.m. and ends at 6 a.m., reducing travel to one lane each one. At times, crews may have to reduce traffic patterns to one alternating lane of travel. Starting Oct. 22, Camp Avenue will close once again as crews begin to install water lines in the area for the next two weeks. The construction of the water lines…

Sewer Work to Close Camp Ave. Again

Sewer work will resume on Camp Avenue in a few weeks.

Expect to see the return of "detour" and "road closed" signs in the Camp Avenue area in a few weeks. Construction will resume in about two weeks on Camp Avenue as crews work to install sewers in the area, forcing motorists in the area to use detours once again. The road was closed for much of August, with motorist using a detour through Quonset to exit the neighborhood. The gate connecting the surrounding neighborhoods to Circuit Drive in Quonset Business Park has remained opened while construction continues. According to Director of Public Works Phil Bergeron, Camp Avenue was reopened and construction put on standby for the start of school. The road will remain open temporarily for two more weeks to allow parents and teachers to acclimate…

Town Council Wrap: White Elephants & Sewers

The council discusses empty buildings, the 23 Washington Street saga and more at Monday night's meeting.

Fate of Vacant Town Buildings Manager Michael Embury proposed ideas for the future of several vacant buildings owned by the town. For several of the buildings, Embury suggested the town hire a real estate firm to market the properties for sale, as the town does not have the expertise or manpower to do so. Selling the buildings would work for properties like the former informational technology building on Reynolds Street and the garage on Oak Hill Road, said Embury. However, Wickford Elementary School may be more complex of an issue. After closing in 2005, the former elementary school has remained dormant from its perch on Phillips Street. Last year, voters shot down a $3.85-million bond to convert the building into a joint town hall and …
