Biomes Back in Business

North Kingstown's aquarium, Biomes, is officially open at its new location.

After more than three months since owner Mark Hall closed his doors at the old Biomes building in Shady Lea, New England's largest private aquarium is officially open at its new location on Post Road. Initially, Hall anticipated to close the old building and open the new facility successively. Unfortunately, fire and building code updates forced back the building’s grand opening by more than two months. Now officially up to code, Biomes is up and running – and with a much different look. The new facility – the former home of Gable House Furniture – boasts about 10,000 sq. ft. of space, which is decidedly much larger than its old building at just 1,700 sq. ft. The added space also means more (and bigger) exhibits. Amongst the nearly 80 …

What NK Business Were You Sad to See Close in 2012?

During these economic times, businesses come and go all the time. Tell us which ones you were sad to see go in the comments section below.

It was another year of welcomes and farewells for North Kingstown businesses. Wide World of Indoor Sports opened its second location in North Kingstown this year. Wickford welcomed back Wickford Gourmet to the village. Sergio's Restaurant on Boston Neck Road closed, making way for Plum Beach Bistro. Wilson's of Wickford nearly went up for auction, but a last-minute approval from the courts saved the building and allowed the merger with Alex & Ani to continue. (Teas & Javas is expected to open in spring 2013.) North Kingstown has also bid farewell to many businesses this year, including 007 Bar & Restaurant, Sydney Rae's in Wickford, Togs and others. TELL US: What North Kingstown business(es) were you sad to see close in 2012? Share with …

What Business Would You Open in NK?

Your imagination is the only limit, what would you open in North Kingstown?

Imagine you had the tools and resources at your disposal - what business would you like to open in North Kingstown? What would work in the community? With our "Up to You" series, we've asked North Kingstown residents what they would do with vacant buildings throughout town. Many have called for an upscale restaurant. Others have wanted a Target, Sam's or Costco, especially in the vacant Lowe's building in Quonset. Personally, I wish North Kingstown had a movie theater or small venue to see musical performances and/or plays. If you could open any type of business in town, what would it be? If you have a specific vision for a specific spot in town, even better! Tell us in the comments.

All the great ideas for nice dining in North Kingstown are wonderful, but we will not have a restaurant scene here until we have a real sewer system. Run the sewer lines into Wickford, all the way down Route 1 and 1A, and tie in the high school while we're at it. When something seems like a great idea but it hasn't happened yet, there is usually a logical reason for it , and this is it.   more ›

Wickford Won't Run on Dunkin'

The NK Zoning Board denied an application for a Dunkin' Donuts outside Wickford Village.

There won’t be a Dunkin’ Donuts in Wickford, at least for now. The North Kingstown Zoning Board of Review denied an application that would have brought a Dunkin’ Donuts to the corner of Phillips Street and Tower Hill Road. Thirteen residents of the more than 50 present at Tuesday night’s meeting vehemently spoke out against the project. The applicants, Theresa Amaral and Robert and David Batista, were seeking to build a 3,000 sq. ft. building on the half-acre lot. Half the building would be a Dunkin’ Donuts (without drive-through service) while the other half would be a business to be determined. Residents and members of both the zoning board and North Kingstown Planning Commission (which gave the project an unfavorable recommendation in…

Great description Mark of the patrons of Dunkin Donuts. I guess that's why the coffee chain has done so remarkably well. I can only imagine what the business would be like if real hard working people were patrons.   more ›

With Thanksgiving behind us, we're now in full-tilt, holiday shopping mode. For those who don't want to venture outside the town lines and would rather support local businesses, North Kingstown Patch is once again putting together our "5 Gotta-Get Gifts in NK" list. I'll be heading out to do "research" (also known as retail therapy) this week, searching for unique gifts you can only find in North Kingstown. Before I head out on my quest for the coolest gifts in NK, I'm seeking input from North Kingstown's residents and business owners. If you know of a really unique gift idea that …

Gotta Get Gifts? Well I have to throw this in the hat... our signature winter-time candle at Beauty and the Bath, Frasier Fir has become a holiday tradition with families and with good reason. It's a high quality clean burning candle that when lit, it gets right to the point. Instead of bringing the hostess a bottle of wine, bring this candle and while she or he is busy putting out hors d'oeuvres…   more ›
