NKPD Upping Presence at Schools Following Newtown

School, town and law enforcement officials appeared at Tuesday night's school committee, discussing school safety in the wake of the tragedy in Newtown.

The North Kingstown School Committee dedicated part of its Tuesday night meeting to an issue that has been on the minds of parents and students around the country since Dec. 14 – the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. "I don't think there was any community that didn't think Sandy Hook couldn't happen to them," said North Kingstown School Superintendent Phil Auger. Following the deadly shooting in Newtown, CT that left 26 people (20 of them children) dead at the hands of shooter Adam Lanza, North Kingstown school officials have been working to tighten up security at schools across the district. At North Kingstown High School, administrators have restricted access to the building: visitors can now only enter the building through the …

People who want to do as much harm as possible look for "soft" targets..targets where there is no one on site to stop them....that is why most of these shootings happen at malls, movie theatres, schools, large office buildings....lots of people (targets) and no one to stop them unti the police show up...periodic patrols are just window dressing to make people feel better.   more ›

I'd rather get shot with a .22 semi-auto rifle then a 12 gauge pump shotgun. How about we ban those too Bruce. They aren't semi-auto but can do way more damage. You need to educate yourself about firearms before you decide the rights of others.   more ›

Threatening Message Found in NKHS Bathroom Deemed Not Credible

Police are still investigating the message found in a stall in the girls' bathroom.

A threatening message found in a bathroom stall at North Kingstown High School yesterday has been deemed "not credible" following an investigation by school officials and the North Kingstown Police Department. The message was found in one of the school's bathrooms around 8 a.m. Wednesday, prompting school administration to contact the NKPD. Following last week's mass shooting in Newtown, CT, school officials decided to notify parents via email about the incident. According to School Superintendent Phil Auger, these types of situations are not uncommon in North Kingstown. In April 2011, Davisville Middle School was evacuated twice in two days following two bomb threats. One of those threats led to the arrest of a custodian, who admitted …

"Antics": I removed my reactive comments to you as well. Of course, I have no idea if you took yours down yourself, or the Patch did it for you... I'm almost postive I know who you are, and I'd just love to have an in-person discussion with you one of these days. You obviously know me, or at least you're familiar with me, and have something personal against me. The only thing is, if you really …   more ›

Reassuring Our Kids After A Heinous Tragedy

Dealing with the unthinkable aftermath of Friday's shooting massacre in Newton, CT.

Writing this piece in the aftermath of the unthinkable tragedy in Newtown, CT on Friday, Dec. 14 is eerily surreal.  To learn that 26 innocent lives, 20 of them precious young children, were killed in a shooting massacre in their very own elementary school is just incomprehensible. As a mom of eight kids, the youngest of whom is 7 and in the first grade,  I was stricken with immense grief and disbelief that sweet, trusting young elementary school-aged children as well as their devoted and loving teachers and staff who cared and taught them were so brutally murdered. A tragedy of this magnitude is horrific, but knowing that so many helpless children were the victims takes the pain and horror to a whole new level.  I am not a certified …

RI to Newtown: Share Your Love

Help Patch build a huge virtual card to the Newtown, CT community and let them know they are in your heart and on your mind.

“There is a saying in Tibetan, 'Tragedy should be utilized as a source of strength.' No matter what sort of difficulties, how painful experience is, if we lose our hope, that's our real disaster.” – The Dalai Lama When unthinkable tragedy strikes, we grapple for a way to come to terms with the how and the why. We search for ways to make sense of what happened, even when it doesn't make sense. The horrific shooting that took place at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, CT, on Friday, Dec. 14 stunned a nation as the news broke that not one child, but 20 six- and seven-year-old children and six of their teachers had been shot and killed by a gunman who then took his own life. Most communities can only begin to imagine the …
