Nicholas Whitely has been sentenced to three years in prison and three at home.
The North Kingstown man has been sentenced to three years in prison and another three years of home confinement after changing his plea from not guilty to no contest in the drunken-driving crash that killed two North Kingstown teenagers last year, according to the Providence Journal. On Feb. 19, 2012, Nicholas Whiteley – now 22 years old – was behind the wheel of a truck carrying 19-year-old Michael Ruggieri and 18-year-old Madeline Healey down Shippeetown Road in East Greenwich. Whiteley, who was under the influence at the time of the crash, reportedly lost control of the vehicle and struck a telephone pole, killing both Ruggieri and Healey. Friends and family remember 18-year-old Maddie Healey, who passed away last week in a deadly crash in East Greenwich.
North Kingstown laid to rest another victim from last Sunday’s deadly crash Saturday – the second in as many days. Hundreds packed into St. Bernard’s Church Saturday morning for the funeral of Madeline “Maddie” Healey, just 24 hours after services were held for Michael Ruggieri who also passed away in Sunday’s crash in East Greenwich. Dave Ruggieri’s eulogy for his oldest son — delivered by a friend — also contained a plea that young people learn from the tragic accident Sunday that killed two.
Michael D. Ruggieri — beloved son, big brother, truck enthusiast, “teddy bear” — was buried Friday at Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery in North Kingstown, after a packed funeral at St. Bernard Catholic Church on Tower Hill Road. The 19-year-old was, according to his dad, David, “really beginning to come into his own” these last few months. He died early Sunday morning when the truck he was riding in overturned on the narrow, winding Shippeetown Road in East Greenwich. Madeline Healey, 18, was also killed that morning. The tragedy that left two teenagers dead early Sunday has cast a pall over both East Greenwich, where it took place, and North Kingstown, home to those involved.
Ever since news broke of the deadly truck rollover on Shippeetown Road in East Greenwich Sunday morning, waves of sadness and concern have rippled through the two communities involved. All four occupants of the pickup truck that crashed around 3:45 a.m. Sunday were from North Kingstown. Nicholas Whiteley is still listed in serious condition at Rhode Island Hospital following a deadly crash in East Greenwich Sunday.
The driver in Sunday's deadly crash is still in serious condition at Rhode Island Hospital while another passenger was treated and released the same day. Nicholas Whiteley, 21, of North Kingstown was driving the pickup truck on Shippeetown Road in East Greenwich when it struck two boulders and went airborne, hitting a telephone pole before overturning. According to reports, Whiteley was ejected from the vehicle along with another passenger. Christopher Mortin, 19, was trapped inside the vehicle along with another passenger, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
