New Village District Finally Gets Approval

The North Kingstown Town Council unanimously approved a new zoning district that fosters the development of village centers.

After months of meetings and delays, North Kingstown finally has a new zoning district in the books as the Town Council unanimously approved a Compact Village Development district at its Monday night meeting. Mixing commercial and residential buildings, the new district allows developers to enhance existing village centers — such as Lafayette, Hamilton, Allenton and others — on property as small as two acres. Studies conducted by Horsley-Witten Group have pointed to revitalized village centers as being crucial to North Kingstown's future. The council was set to vote on the matter two weeks prior, but due to council member Charles Stamm’s absence, the group decided to push the final vote back to Monday’s meeting. Both the concepts of transferring development rights and the concept of "CVD"s are WAY too flexible and malleable for the government to use them properly. It's almost inevitable that they will be abused and used to grant favors, deny favors, make money for friends, etc etc etc. And with this group (Embury and this TC), that's just par for the course.   more ›
