Letter: A Sense of Place Is Worth Fighting For

Members of Historic Wickford believe that "a sense of place" is worth fighting for and call for action against changes made to 23 Washington Street.

To the editor There's a reason why some communities elect to have a local historic district under the jurisdiction of a local historic commission (HDC). The State of Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission’s (RIHCPC) website states the main advantage as, "Historic district zoning protects a neighborhood's historic architecture, which largely defines its sense of place. Thoughtless alterations to historic buildings can erode property values and destroy the qualities that make a neighborhood appealing." The Commission also states the main disadvantage as, "Preparing applications to the historic district commission may require extra time and effort before construction begins. JPal, with due respect, you may have missed the point. My car can exceed 150mph however the rules state I am punished if I do so. My house has space for six bedrooms, but rules say my max is four. An owner needs follow rules as set by ordinances (laws) prepared with long arduous meetings and due diligence in this case by the HDC, ZB and TC or challenge them legally.
