5 Things: Fair Time, Best of NK

Here are 5 Things to know in North Kingstown today.

1. The 46th Annual Washington County Fair, the largest agricultural event in Rhode Island, kicks off today and runs through the 19th. Each day features entertainment, special events, rides, arts and crafts, exhibits and displays, tractor and horse pulls, etc. For all the Fair details visit the Washington County Fair website. 5 Things: ESP Contract, School Committee & More

Five things to know for June 26.

1.  The North Kingstown School Committee made substantial changes last night regarding the school department's support staff, cutting 26 custodians (pending outsourcing), in which the proposed incoming company has promised to hire back the current employees) and making unilateral changes to the rest of the district's support staff. Read our brief here and check back for more information on this story later. 2.  The NK School Committee is also meeting tonight at 7 p.m., once again at the high school. On tap, the committee will discuss transferring $200,000 from its fund balance for a possible HVAC project at the high school, technology infrastructure and classroom technology. The group is having a meeting this morning from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. at the YMCA to brainstorm ideas. 2.  Ever hear of Quality Hill? Council Accepts Healthy Places by Design Action Plan

From biking to walking to healthy foods, North Kingstown has a plan of attack on how to become a healthier community.

Months of community meetings, surveys and discussion have culminated in the Healthy Places by Design action plan, which town planners hope will be a “major focus piece” for rewriting North Kingstown’s comprehensive plan. At its Monday night meeting, the North Kingstown Town Council accepted the plan that outlines what North Kingstown is currently doing to become a healthier community and what still needs to be done. North Kingstown was awarded $225,000 in federal grants for the Healthy Places by Design initiative, along with Pawtucket and South Kingstown. The project is part of a nationwide grant program to help communities implement policy changes that foster health and wellness. The Town of North Kingstown partnered with West Bay Family …

5 Things: Another School Committee Meeting, Daffodils & More

Five things to know for April 12.

1.  The North Kingstown School Committee couldn't make a quorum Tuesday night and thus will hold a meeting Friday at 8:45 a.m. at the North Kingstown School Department's Administrative Office on Fairway Drive. On the agenda, the committee looks to decide on allowing a charter school to lease out part of Davisville Elementary School, among other agenda items. 2.   Taxes are due on April 17. Need some help? Head over to Beechwood Senior Center Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. to get aid from the AARP-sponsored Tax Aide Program. 1.  The North Kingstown Fire Department will be making a different sort of "head"-line this evening. Members of the NKFD will be going under the razor for the annual St. Baldrick's event, shaving their heads to raise money to combat childhood cancer. Regarding the federal grant app--when does the final decision come down! In the mean time who picks up the short fall? Rhetorical I know--the taxpayers who else! $4.00/day parking fee and coffee and donut sales=$10k per month. That's a lot of coffee and donuts!
