VIDEO: Full Steam Ahead For Wickford Junction

The MBTA commuter rail is officially running out of Wickford Junction.

Despite the cold, damp and blustery weather, hundreds came out Monday for the grand opening of the long-awaited commuter rail station at Wickford Junction. A ceremonial first train left Providence Monday morning, bound for Wickford Junction and carrying Gov. Lincoln Chafee, Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse and Jack Reed, Reps. James Langevin and David Cicilline and more. Many passengers on the train were friends of Bob Cioe, the man behind the dream of bringing rail service back to Wickford. The journey has been a long one for Cioe, owner of the Wickford Junction plaza, who bought the land 30 years ago. Gathering in the four-story parking garage at Wickford Junction, the crowd heard remarks from the governor, the congressional delegation, Rhode …

Great but to make this worth it we need weekend service to pvd and Boston and late night. For events like water fire, new years, sox games, etc. If it extends to Kingston URI students as well could take train to PVd and perhaps with late night service less drunks driving on the roads.   more ›

Governor Visits NK Town Council, Talks Municipal Relief Package

Governor Chafee made a stop in at Monday night's town council meeting to discuss his municipal relief plan for four distressed cities.

Governor Lincoln Chafee made a special appearance at Monday night's North Kingstown Town Council meeting to talk about his newest piece of legislation. The legislative package would help Rhode Island's four "highly distressed" municipalities – Woonsocket, Pawtucket, West Warwick and Providence. (The capital city recently just saw a three-notch downgrade in its bond rating while Woonsocket is struggling to make payroll.) "We've seen Central Falls go into bankruptcy and others may be close behind," said Chafee. The legislation would repeal certain state mandates for these troubled cities and towns, including suspension of cost of living adjustments (COLAs). The initiative aims to offset the $220 million in municipal aid from the state that …

Chafee: Davisville Now Among Largest Auto Importers in North America

The Port of Davisville has moved up in the rankings and is now the seventh largest auto importer in North America.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee announced that the Port of Davisville has moved up and is now the seventh largest auto importer in North America. Based on 2011 figures, 150,000 vehicles were imported via the port while another 41,000 came by rail. Located inside the Quonset Business Park, the port was initially used by the military during World War II and is the original home to the Navy’s Construction Battalion — more commonly known as the Seabees. “The Port of Davisville — as well as the entire Quonset Business Park — is one of Rhode Island’s key assets,” said Chafee. “Last year’s results put us ahead of Boston, Halifax, Philadelphia, Norfolk, Charlestown, Seattle — among others — as one of the premier auto ports on the continent.” Most vehicles …

Irene Weakens, But Remains Serious Threat

Gov. Lincoln Chafee urged residents to continue preparing for the worst as the strong tropical storm nears.

While Hurricane Irene has weakened as it approaches the New England coast, it is still a strong, potentially dangerous storm that commands respect. Gov. Lincoln Chafee thanked residents for their preparation so far and urged them to continue to prepare for the worst as the storm draws near. "In the event the storm gathers strength, it's best to be prepared and not take any risks," Chafee said during a press briefing at the Emergency Management Agency in Cranston Saturday evening. "I am very, very impressed with the preparation of our citizens in advance of Hurricane Irene. We have some good news that it is weakening, but it still is a major, major, significant event." Forecasters at the National Weather Service are predicting that …

U.S. Interior Secretary Calls For Wind Farms Off RI's Coast

Quonset Point may be poised to become job creation hub if used as assembly station for potential wind farms off RI's coasts.

The movement to bring offshore wind projects to the coasts of New England got a boost from the federal government Wednesday when  U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced a federal initiative to bring offshore wind projects to the coasts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. In what Salazar called a “major milestone,” the federal government is calling for letters of interest within the next 45 days from those wanting to develop wind farms off the coast of Rhode Island. Salazar made the announcement Wednesday morning in a press conference  at Quonset’s Compass Rose Beach with members of the state’s congressional delegation and the governor. The area of land, off the coast of Rhode and Massachusetts between Block Island and Martha’s…
