Gov. Chafee and the RI Department of Transportation announced free parking will be available at commuter rail stations for the rest of winter.
Drivers can now take advantage of free parking this winter at two of Rhode Island's commuter rail stations. Gov. Lincoln Chafee and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation have announced that parking at the garages at Wickford Junction Station in North Kingstown and the Interlink at T.F. Green Airport in Warwick will be free for the remainder of the winter. Officials are offering free parking to help drivers stay off the roads during poor driving conditions this winter. "As we have seen over the past couple of days, travel conditions and parking in Providence have been anything but normal because of the blizzard," said Gov. Chafee. "In consideration of what has happened, and the expectations of future storms in the coming weeks, we…

Gov. Chafee is restricting non-essential travel in the state.
UPDATE: The driving ban has been lifted as of 4 p.m. A statewide driving ban is still in effect while crews continue to clear roads across Rhode. This afternoon, Governor Lincoln Chafee declared several exemptions to the ban, specifically for those heading to shelters. As of 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, almost 180,000 Rhode Islanders are without power – almost 37 percent of the state. In North Kingstown, 7,850 of 13,035 customers are powerless. According to National Grid spokesperson David Graves, many Rhode Islanders could be without power for several days. In anticipation of restoration delays, several warming centers have been set up in the area. Temperatures are expected to drop to around 11 tonight. Those without power can seek refuge at …

Gov. Chafee's office backtracks from an announcement Monday that there would be no official tree-lighting ceremony this year.
There will be a tree-lighting ceremony this year after all. Gov. Lincoln Chafee's top press aide said Tuesday she spoke in error Monday when she said there would be no tree lighting ceremony. "There will be an official tree lighting ceremony at the State House with the Governor in attendance," said Christine Hunsinger in an email statement. No date has been set. Now, the question is, will protesters turn up again as they did last year, when Gov. Lincoln Chafee referred to the large evergreen in the middle of the State House rotonda as a holiday tree instead of a Christmas tree. The tree was erected Monday. Last December, Chafee was lambasted by GOP lawmakers, some talk show hosts, and the Roman Catholic Bishop Tobin for his decision to …

Resolution by Rep. Doreen Costa asks governor to abandon battle to keep Pleau from federal jurisdiction.
Rep. Doreen Costa (R- Dist. 31, Exeter, North Kingstown) has drafted a resolution asking Gov. Lincoln Chafee to abandon his fight to keep accused murderer Jason Pleau in state custody. Pleau has been the subject of a struggle between federal authorities and Chafee for nearly a year because he could face the death penalty in federal court. On May 10, Chafee said he intends to appeal the U.S First Circuit Court of Appeals ruling telling him to turn over Pleau to federal authorities. Costa said her resolution asks Chafee to give up the fight out of respect for the family of David Main, whom Pleau is accused of killing during a night deposit robbery at Citizen's Bank. Costa said she has more than 50 signatures in support of her measure. Sen…

The head of the state's Economic Development Corporation has stepped down following the controversy of Curt Schilling's 38 Studios.
Keith Stokes has stepped down as the head of the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation amid the controversy surrounding Curt Schilling’s videogame company 38 Studios, according to the Providence Journal. The company, headed by the former Red Sox pitcher, defaulted on a $1.125-million payment to the state on May 1. On Wednesday, Schilling and members of 38 Studios met with state and EDC officials in an emergency meeting that was closed to the public. In 2010, EDC approved a $75-million guaranteed loan to the videogame company following 38 Studios’ promise to bring 450 jobs to the state by the end of 2012 and moved its business from Massachusetts to Providence. Stokes, a longtime board member of the EDC, was appointed by former Gov. …

Gov. Chafee Monday said all state offices must recognize out-of-state same sex marriages and that R.I. pass marriage equality.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee signed an executive order recognizing out-of-state same sex marriages Monday, reported the Providence Journal. RI Future broke the story Monday morning and reported Monday afternoon that at a press conference Monday afternoon, Chafee said “Let’s get there ourselves. This is the home of Roger Williams. Come on, let’s go.” The state General Assembly passes a law last June allowing for same-sex civil union, but for many in the gay community that isn't enough. “While this moves us closer to full marriage equality, nothing less is sufficient, and we will keep fighting," said Ray Sullivan of Marriage Equality Rhode Island, in a press release. According to RI Future's Bob Plain, Chafee is talking to members of the General …

The Port of Davisville has moved up in the rankings and is now the seventh largest auto importer in North America.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee announced that the Port of Davisville has moved up and is now the seventh largest auto importer in North America. Based on 2011 figures, 150,000 vehicles were imported via the port while another 41,000 came by rail. Located inside the Quonset Business Park, the port was initially used by the military during World War II and is the original home to the Navy’s Construction Battalion — more commonly known as the Seabees. “The Port of Davisville — as well as the entire Quonset Business Park — is one of Rhode Island’s key assets,” said Chafee. “Last year’s results put us ahead of Boston, Halifax, Philadelphia, Norfolk, Charlestown, Seattle — among others — as one of the premier auto ports on the continent.” Most vehicles …

The governor and other officials broke ground on a new indoor sports facility, coming to Quonset Business Park.
Quonset's newest resident may make the excuse "there's nothing to do in North Kingstown" invalid. Gov. Lincoln Chafee, state officials and members of the business community welcomed Wide World of Indoors Sports to the Quonset Gateway Thursday afternoon in a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony. "This is great for the kids because these days they come home and start texting," said Stephen Sangermano, owner of Wide World of Indoor Sports. "They don't have a lot of ways to release their energy." The 76,000 sq. ft. facility will be located behind the former Lowe's building on Davisville Road in the Quonset Business Park. Programs for soccer, field hockey, flag football, lacrosse, softball, volleyball, wiffleball and more will be offered for …

Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee is hosting a "holiday tree" lighting next week, despite objections.
Holiday tree or Christmas tree? Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee is calling the 17-foot spruce tree that will be lit inside the Statehouse rotunda a "holiday tree," even though the General Assembly passed a resolution calling it a "Christmas tree" earlier this year. According to The Providence Journal, the governor is defending his use of the term, saying it honors Rhode Island's heritage as a refuge for religious tolerance three centuries ago. Some state lawmakers criticize his position, and an Associated Press story on the issue has been picked up across the country. News outlets such as The Washington Post, MSNBC and the Huffington Post have all run with the story. The governor is inviting all Rhode Islanders to join him and his wife …
