gotta agree with you @MeanE....the tree needs a greater number and variety of lights. I've noticed in past years that the tree is not heavily "branched"...so maybe that is part of the challenge. Maybe in future years the individual branches could be wrapped with the smaller colored lights in addition to the larger white swag style lights that are currently exclusively used. Just curious, do you …   more ›

Festival of Lights Returning For 27th Year

Wickford's holiday celebration will return Nov. 29 - Dec. 2.

It's not Christmas in Wickford Village without Festival of Lights. The historic village's holiday celebration returns for a 27th year, running from Nov. 29 to Dec. 2. The festival begins on Thursday, Nov. 29 with the official lighting of the tree at Updike Park, accompanied with a performance by the North Kingstown Community Youth Chorus and the Lafayette Band. Store owners across the village will also be showing off their holiday spirit with decorated storefronts, competing for the much-coveted "Best Display" contest. On Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon, Santa will arrive at Wickford's town dock via boat aboard the Sea Princess – followed by hayrides and carols throughout the village.  Many shops will have …

I love this village. However, what a sad display of lights on the Christmas tree. It looked positively awful on channel 10 news. Pathetic in fact. Not enough lights and poorly placed. Not a shining moment.   more ›

Get Off the Couch

Get Off the Couch: Festival of Lights and a Wickford Holiday Shopping Guide

With the holidays upon us, make sure you add Wickford to your Christmas list.

If you have walked through Wickford lately, or have been keeping up to date on Patch, you have probably noticed the town is preparing for the Festival of Lights. The celebration, which is coming up this weekend, is a great way to get into the Christmas spirit. Strolling down Brown Street at night amidst all the lights and carolers helps transform a picturesque New England village into a winter wonderland. I would like to applaud the town's efforts in donating $7,000 toward the festival, easing the burden from small businesses in Wickford that normally split the costs. As someone who had spent years at the Festival of Lights selling Christmas wreaths to raise money for Boy Scout Troop 152, it is awesome to see that the festival will still …
