Superintendent vs. Town Manager: Who Should Earn More?

Compare the salaries of NK's superintendent of schools and town manager.

Last week, GoLocalProv posted an article about Rhode Island's highest paid local officials – our school superintendents. According to GoLocalProv, Rhode Island's highest paid superintendent is Providence's Susan Lusi with a $190,000 salary – just $13,000 shy of State Education Commission Deborah Gist's pay.  Stephen Beale, who wrote the article, also states: The superintendents for some of the largest, more urban school districts made the top ten list, including those in Warwick, Pawtucket, and Woonsocket. But the heads of comparatively smaller school systems, such as Middletown and Portsmouth are also among the highest paid. The state average salary for superintendents is $135,535, according to the article. By comparison, town managers …

NK Superintendent Is Cumberland's Top Choice To Lead District

The Cumberland School Committee voted 6-1 to hire Philip Thornton.

North Kingstown may be one step closer to losing its superintendent. The Valley Breeze reports that Dr. Philip Thornton has been selected as the Cumberland School Committee’s choice to take the helm as the district’s superintendent. In a 6-1 vote Tuesday following a closed-door session, the committee selected Thornton over Michael Lazzareschi, principal of Nathan Bishop Middle School in Providence. “My feeling is that Dr. Thornton was the right choice for us right now,” said Cumberland School Committee Chairman Jeffrey Mutter. “I sense that he wants to get things done and so do we. We would feel very lucky to have him at the helm.” According to the Valley Breeze, Thornton will be offered a base salary of $150,000 – $3,000 above his current…

Speaking to the point of improving functionality at SC meetings, Richard August made some very specific points in a piece today in the Times. He lays out very clearly - point by point - the process that should be adhered to address and correct the dysfunction once and for all. My hope is with Ms Page in the chair seat, these basics from Robert's Rules of Order will be implemented with the …   more ›

NK Superintendent May Leave For Cumberland

NK Superintendent Phil Thornton has been named one of two finalists for Cumberland's superintendent.

Cumberland has named two finalists for its soon-to-be vacant superintendent position, and one of them is North Kingstown's own superintendent. Dr. Philip Thornton has been named as a finalist along with Nathan Bishop High School Principal Michael Lazzareschi, reports The Providence Journal, after a 14-member screening committee reviewed 27 applicants. According to The Providence Journal, Thornton will spend the day in Cumberland on Friday and be interviewed by the Cumberland School Committee Monday evening. The committee is slated to select a candidate within the next two weeks. "I'm really troubled and upset because I think we have a very good leader in Dr. Thornton," said School Committee Member Lynda Avanzato. "I don't think anyone …

NK's Withdrawal From SORICO A Calculated Risk

If SORICO decides to sell its Camp Avenue building after NK's withdrawal, the town would not see profits. But, by withdrawing in June, it would also avoid paying annual dues and potential mortgage expenses.

The North Kingstown School Committee's decision to signal its intent to withdraw from SORICO June 30 was done to avoid being saddled with continuing costs, according to Superintendent Phil Thornton, but it could result in a loss in the share of profits if the agency's property were to be sold after June 30. The committee's decision comes after the board for the Southern Rhode Island Collaborative Education and Training Center voted to terminate all programs and services and staff by June 30. SORICO was founded in 1990 to provide its nine member districts with educational programs and services at reduced rates, said Michael McGee, the outgoing executive director. The board (known as the Collaborative Council) did not dissolve the North …
