Benson To Remain A Democrat

Despite her resignation from the NK Democratic Town Committee, Melvoid Benson says she'll remain a Democrat.

The events at last week's North Kingstown Democratic Town Committee meeting were enough for Melvoid Benson to leave the committee, but won't be enough for her to leave the Democratic party. "By no means is there any alienation between me and the Democrats," she said Friday. Benson, a member of the North Kingstown School Committee, was censured by the town committee at the Dec. 29 meeting. She says she will continue to work to elect Democratic candidates. "I just won't be attending the town committee meetings," she said. At the Dec. 29 meeting where she was censured, a small group of committee members introduced the censure motion after Benson voted to support a Republican, Kimberly Page, as vice chair of the School Committee. NK Democrats Lose Ground On School Committee & State House

Larry Ceresi is the only Democrat elected to school committee while Kenneth Carter loses in General Assembly District 31. Michael Bestwick wins re-election to NK Town Council where Charles Brennan replaces Stephen DeToy.

Duffy's Tavern saw a "blue" crowd Tuesday night as North Kingstown Democrats gathered to monitor the elections, in which they lost ground in both school committee and the General Assembly. "National trends are not usually reflected in our local elections," said Larry Ceresi Tuesday at Duffy's, where about 60 Democrats gathered to monitor election results. "But this time the national trend was reflected locally." Ceresi serves as chair of the North Kingstown School Committee, which has six Democrats.
