Five Things To Know Today

Portions of Route 2/102 Rezoned

Rolling Greens, Corner Tavern and the former Bald Hill Nursery properties have been rezoned to a compact village development.

North Kingstown how has land zoned compact village development. The new zoning district got its first takers as the NK Town Council rezoned portions of the Route 2/102 intersection as a CVD – including the land at Rolling Greens Golf Course. This is the first time the CVD zone has been used in town after the council recently passed an updated version of the zoning district. The North Kingstown Planning Commission rehashed the existing CVD following discussions regarding the application for a village center at Rolling Greens Golf Course. The project, called The Preserve at Rolling Greens, has come under heavy scrutiny from residents who are against more commercial in the area and also want to preserve the rural landscape at that …

Dear Plain Truth, Would you please enumerate the 11 suggestions omitted by the Town Council? Perhaps we could solicit the support of the new Independent member? I write them all the time but rarely get a respectful answer.   more ›

New Master Plan Submitted for Rolling Greens

Rolling Greens comes back on the planning commission table next month.

The North Kingstown Planning Commission is getting a look at a new master plan for a proposed village center development at Rolling Greens Golf Course next month. The mixed-use housing and commercial project, called The Preserve at Rolling Greens and located at the intersection of Route 2 and 102, shows 50,000 sq. ft. of commercial development and 106 housing units  - more than the respective 35,000 sq. ft. of commercial and 92 residential units proposed in the last variation of the project’s master plan. (View the full master plan here.) Additionally, the plan features a new clubhouse for the golf course, a new Oatley’s Restaurant (which was built in 1965), tennis courts and a gazebo. A three-acre area of land on the western edge of the…

I was warning about Hueston, Dolan, NKGOP years ago. Did anyone listen? A few did. But not enough to organize into a group that could have taken back the council. And we are paying the price with every move they make. Would have taken like about 20 or 30 people (out of 27000). Thats it. Sad, really, that these blow-ins trash our town and get away with it. Lay waste to scenic rural lands and …   more ›

Council Accepts Healthy Places by Design Action Plan

From biking to walking to healthy foods, North Kingstown has a plan of attack on how to become a healthier community.

Months of community meetings, surveys and discussion have culminated in the Healthy Places by Design action plan, which town planners hope will be a “major focus piece” for rewriting North Kingstown’s comprehensive plan. At its Monday night meeting, the North Kingstown Town Council accepted the plan that outlines what North Kingstown is currently doing to become a healthier community and what still needs to be done. North Kingstown was awarded $225,000 in federal grants for the Healthy Places by Design initiative, along with Pawtucket and South Kingstown. The project is part of a nationwide grant program to help communities implement policy changes that foster health and wellness. The Town of North Kingstown partnered with West Bay Family …

New Village District Finally Gets Approval

The North Kingstown Town Council unanimously approved a new zoning district that fosters the development of village centers.

After months of meetings and delays, North Kingstown finally has a new zoning district in the books as the Town Council unanimously approved a Compact Village Development district at its Monday night meeting. Mixing commercial and residential buildings, the new district allows developers to enhance existing village centers — such as Lafayette, Hamilton, Allenton and others — on property as small as two acres. Studies conducted by Horsley-Witten Group have pointed to revitalized village centers as being crucial to North Kingstown's future. The council was set to vote on the matter two weeks prior, but due to council member Charles Stamm’s absence, the group decided to push the final vote back to Monday’s meeting. Prior to the vote, Stamm …

Both the concepts of transferring development rights and the concept of "CVD"s are WAY too flexible and malleable for the government to use them properly. It's almost inevitable that they will be abused and used to grant favors, deny favors, make money for friends, etc etc etc. And with this group (Embury and this TC), that's just par for the course.   more ›

Letter: Consider Compromise for New Village District

One North Kingstown resident highlights a possible compromise regarding a controversial new village district. The Town Council is set to vote on the matter on Monday, Feb. 27.

At its last meeting, the North Kingstown Town Council heard public input on the much contested new compact village development (CVD) ordinance draft, but delayed a final vote until the next meeting on Feb. 27, 2012 when all five councilors can be present. (Councilor Stamm was absent last week and had asked for the delay.) Two important aspects of that meeting were that a petition was handed in on behalf of the developer proposing the Rolling Greens project and that a resident proposed a very interesting compromise solution which addresses all the issues with this problematic new ordinance. The petition reads: "North Kingstown Residents Petition in Support of a Retirement Community, the Preservation of 90 acres and a Public Golf Course." …

The TC has very rarely had the best interests of the town in mind. It's high time that the people of NK stand up and demand that the collective good of NK is put first! Creeping commercial development disguised as another hair brained planning idea must cease. When are we going to demand that the Post Rd. corridor receives the attention that it deserves. Don't we have enough empty commercial …   more ›

Another Meeting, Another Delay for New Village District

The Town Council will vote on a compact village development district on Feb. 27.

Following months of planning commission meetings filled with deliberations, delays and constant public input, the fate of a controversial village center zoning district has once again been pushed back. The North Kingstown Town Council decided to push back its pivotal vote until Feb. 27, when fellow committee member Charles Stamm (who was absent from Monday’s meeting) would be able to attend. The North Kingstown Planning Commission began to look at the zoning district in question – a compact village development (CVD) zone – following plans proposed by Mark Hawkins for a village center at Rolling Greens Golf Course on Ten Rod Road.  Since its initial meeting in December 2010, nearby residents have come out largely opposing the 102-acre, …

Five things to know for Feb. 11.
