Committee members request more information on the schools' enterprise fund.
Faced with a $2-million-plus budget deficit for 2013, the North Kingstown School Committee asked for more information on two sports-related initiatives remaining in this fiscal year. John Boscardin questioned why the May 8 agenda had a consent agenda item approving an assistant boys' lacrosse coach when the season is already under way. Superintendent Phil Auger acknowledged that the question of approving coaches after the season begins has come up before regarding other sports. He said he would research the issue and present information on how coaches are selected and appointed at the next meeting. The committee then approved hiring Philip White for $2,433.75 as an assistant lacrosse coach, and approved Robert Vallee as an unpaid volunteer…

School committee reviewed superintendent's recommendations, but did not agree on actions that would cut teachers, supplies and five high school sports.
Not orange. Not green. Not red. After two hours of discussion and comments from 10 citizens, the North Kingstown School Committee declined 3-3 to approve budget cuts or additions in any category at its May 8 meeting. Larry Ceresi was absent, recovering from back surgery, said Chair Kimberly Page. With the North Kingstown Town Council increasing the school’s fiscal year 2013 budget by two percent rather than the requested 4 percent, the schools face a shortfall of $848,349 from this year’s budget, due in part to inflation and less of a contribution from state aid. In response, Superintendant Phil Auger grouped his recommended changes into three color-coded categories designed to shrink the budget to the approved $57,243,694. The orange …

An online petition has received more than 1,000 signatures from residents throughout New England who would like to see a legal drag strip built in Rhode Island.
Rhode Island drag racing enthusiasts are petitioning for the State Senate to designate an area of land for a legal drag strip. An online petition on Change.org has gained a quick following this month, with supporters pushing for the state to allow a private investor to build the designated space. According to Providence resident Joshua Upham, who started the petition, our state has been the home of "many accidents (sometimes fatal) of illegal street racers." "These 'Street Races' are dangerous, Illegal, and a nuisance to the citizen's of Rhode Island," he writes in the petition. Consequently, he wants to "persuade the State of Rhode Island to set aside a slot of land to build a drag racing strip where legal drag-racing can occur." …

It's Patriots Day in Massachusetts, and one North Kingstown woman is going the distance in the Boston Marathon.
It's a particularly hot day to be running a Marathon, but that's what North Kingstown resident Dianna Glass, 42 (#17093) will do as she takes to the starting line in Hopkinton, MA. There's a heat advisory issued for the area today, which is nice for sipping lemonade, but not so great if you're planning to run 26.2 miles in a marathon. "This will not be a day to run a personal best," according to the Boston Athletic Association's statement about the conditions. "If you choose to run, run safely above all else. Speed can kill,” they said. “Recognizing symptoms of heat illness in yourself and others is critical, this may include headaches, dizziness, confusion, fatigue, nausea and vomiting. If you experience any of these, stop running …

North Kingstown's superintendent has a proposal that would reopen the closed school this fall, gaining revenue from a public charter school.
Superintendent Phil Auger has an idea for Davisville Elementary School that could see it reopen as soon as this fall as a combined-use building, which could save the district hundreds of thousands of dollars. Under the plan, roughly two-thirds of the building would house the Greene School — a public charter high school dedicated to community and the environment. According to Auger, the school would have about 168 students and between 20 and 25 staff members. The rest of the building would be dedicated to North Kingstown School Department programs, such as NK KIN-Nect Preschool, Child Opportunity Zone, Parents as Teachers, adult education classes and other programs. A special education transition program aimed at helping students adjust to…

Sorry, I was being a little tongue-in-cheek. I do agree with you that the SC needs some help moving forward -- if anything to help deal with the combative relationship that's developed with the TC. We're going to have to disagree that someone like "Joe" would be anything but disasterous on the SC.   more ›
