State Rep Works to Fill Food Pantry

State Rep. Doreen Costa is organizing an event to restock the North Kingstown Food Pantry's shelves.

The North Kingstown Food Pantry began this summer in the worst way possible – with completely bare and empty shelves, having to turn away needy families for the first time ever. Though the community mobilized in getting the word out and soliciting donations, the growing need for the food pantry is putting a strain on its shelves and help is still needed.

After seeing the empty cupboards at the pantry, State Rep. Doreen Costa (R - North Kingstown, Exeter) has organized a food drive on July 14 from noon to 2 p.m. at in North Kingstown.

"Even though North Kingstown is known as an affluent community, we still have people in need and we have to help them too." said Costa.

Those looking to donate are encouraged to drop of non-perishable food items and gift certificates to grocery stores to help the pantry restock.

Located in the backroom of the North Kingstown United Methodist Church, the food pantry typically supplies people with a week's worth of groceries. As supplies are depleting, the pantry has only been able to provide a few days worth of food.

I like how there is no comments on this article...while everyone is commenting on the unions protesting...goes to show sometimes good natured things don't get as much press as bad news

We dropped off all donations yesterday!!! Way to go Rachel!! Everyone please keep the food pantry in mind during the summer months when the demand is high.

Doreen is a breath of fresh air in that hell hole of a state house. Voters need to get out the brooms and clean out that place - the old rif-raf have to go. The state is dying.

I don't know where Costa gets her energy from, wish I knew her secret!

I Find Rep. Costa's quote in this article to be extreamly Ironic considering her voting record has been anything but helpfull to those "in need". In two legeslative sessions Rep. Costa has voted against affordable housing measures twice, proposed to strip families of welfare benifits pending a drug test, and this year voted against the Homeless Bill of Rights. -Joseph M. What is wrong with having people on Welfare testing for drugs???? Employers test!!!!!! Positive test = loss of employment. Do you expect tax paying residents to subsidize the purchasing of drugs???? So do tell what her objection to affordable housing or homeless bill of rights OR do you prefer to spread ill feelings based on what you can see rather than ALL of the facts???? Since you seem to be quite the expert can you share the percentage of individuals that abuse entitlement programs???? Let me educate you in this single sentence, Ms Costa is one of the most caring person's in RI (people and animals) voting her conscious for the good of the all as opposed to a select group(s).

I'd have to write an entire column to explain why drug testing for welfare benifits is a draconian measure!!! In short, its too expensive(florida has lost money doing this). Its also immoral and just the wrong way to govern by throwing children off benifits because of the action of their parents. Most people forget that 2/3s of those on welfare are children!!! I actually do consider myself an expert on housing issues in RI, i have met with Ms Costa about this issue and i'm not going to speak for her, why don't you ask her yourself? I will tell you that only 5 Reps voted against the Homeless Bill of Rights

Excellent idea to have a food drive Doreen, I'll be there! We're so happy to have you as our State Rep!

What a joke!!! ANYTHING to get attention. Politicizing the homeless. Doreen should be ashamed of herself. Still waiting to hear which bills, (Just list the bill number - real simple), that she was the primary sponsor of which got passed this year to help all of us, North Kingstown / Exeter / State of Rhode Island residents. A state representative is elected to help ALL the people, not special interests or a select few that the representative selects to help. LIST THE BILLS PASSED PLEASE! Enough of the garbage talk / postings.

Tedy B must be so proud.

Not sure what you mean by that NK Parent. Just being upfront, honest, and to the point here. What has the Representative been the primary sponsor of that was passed to benefit ALL of us the past two (2) years. Real simple request here.

@Mom: Please allow me to educate you on how it works @ statehouse. When a non-democRAT files a bill it get's "held for further study"...which is code for committeemen to investigate and/or kill the bill. The very last thing the democRATS want to do is give the "enemy" any credit. It's pathetic. True. Adding to the acrimony sponsored by the democRAT majority. ... Wonder why the state is DYING?? But, you already know this, so why the subterfuge? Study your civics.
Watcher July 18, 2012 at 05:36 PM
Too bad she doesn't do anything worthwhile at the statehouse. Not one single bill passed in two years. And have you ever heard her speak? The vocabulary of a 13 year old. I will not vote for that dunce again. Fool me once...

Hey look! It's Steven DeNuccio, Doreen's racist, lunatic campaign manager!
