Locals Fundraise to Send Beisel Family to London

T-shirts are on sale to raise money to send the Beisel family to watch Elizabeth compete in her second Olympic Games.

Joan Beisel spent most of August 2008 in Beijing, watching her as the youngest member of the U.S. Olympic swim team. Due to the exponential cost to travel and attend the games half a world away, her husband Ted watched his daughter compete from the family’s favorite restaurant – Twin Willows. One fellow community member is working to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself in 2012.

Debbie Gardiner, who works with Joan at the North Kingstown School Department, has started a fundraiser effort to help the Beisel family join Elizabeth in London for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Made by the folks at Needle Designs on Tower Hill Road, Gardiner and other volunteers are selling “Team Beisel” T-shirts for $10. Volunteers are selling the shirts on the weekends at the North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce, Dave’s Marketplace in Wickford and Twin Willows. Though the shirts are being sold locally, Gardiner is hoping the word will spread.

“My hope is that this will be more than just a North Kingstown thing, but statewide,” said Gardiner. “We’re just so proud of her.”

The 19-year-old Saunderstown native and 2010 North Kingstown High School will be competing in her second Olympics . Gardiner and others are hoping that Beisel’s father, mother and brother Daniel can see their Olympian perform on the world stage.

“How many parents get to say that their daughter is going to the Olympics for a second time?” said Gardiner.

So far, many have gotten behind the effort. According to Gardiner, Twin Willows had 100 shirts in stock and already needs to replenish its shirt supply after just a few days.

Gardiner doesn’t have a goal amount but says she’d be “ecstatic” if they reached $5,000 raised. That target may be in range after she received a private donation of $1,000.

“Anything we give them is going to help, especially with how much it costs,” said Gardiner.

According to Orbitz.com, a roundtrip ticket from Logan Airport in Boston to London’s Heathrow Airport is around $850-$950 per passenger. Average hotel rates per night in the heart of London are around $500 – and those figures are just per person and don’t factor in food, tickets to Olympic events and other costs.

A portion of the proceeds raised from the shirt sales will benefit the , per the request of the Beisel family.

For more information about the shirts, leave a message for Debbie Gardiner at Needle Designs at 401-267-0800.

This is a great idea - you help local people and send a HS graduate to the Olympics.

@ Beth J-L, If you actually read my post, I was questioning the fundraising effort to help send the family and NOT the olympian. I feel that with poverty nationwide never higher, the fundraising efforts may be better served for people that actually need it. This trip to the olympics did not come as a complete surprise to the Beisel family. Any family in that situation would (should) have been saving for this. I am happy all of Elizabeths hard work is coming to fruition, but will not be buying a t-shirt or attending the $25 Beisel Cocktail reception in Narragansett.
Paul Marshall July 25, 2012 at 12:32 PM
@Beth J-L: there is no accounting for people. Some folks just don't get concepts like family, teamwork, sharing, sacrafice, persistence, and love of country. Elizabeth didn't get to London alone. It took a team. Someone once said: "life is a team effort". God Bless those who can't do Olympic feats BUT help those who do in any way they can. Win or lose, I'm proud to be a part of "Team Beisel", glad you are too.
Dark star July 25, 2012 at 12:42 PM
Paul, I completely understand those concepts. What do not understand is asking for support to cover personal travel expenses for a trip that was not a complete surprise. They had 4 years to plan and save as a family. I am happy for her and her success, but will not support "fund-raising" for family and friends to vacation in London.

Seems like "Tired" gets up on the wrong side of the bed every day. It was so important for me to know that Tired wouldn't be buying a shirt because of they don't "understand". Its a sad commentary when an event like this is criticized but the fact that it was sheds light on a negativity mindset that I unfortunately see permeating our society and is revealed more and more in these forums. Tired can spare me the civics lesson while I support the "Team" that has raised my spirits and brought that great spirit to virtually everyone in NK that I know.
NK Parent July 25, 2012 at 02:19 PM
Tired, Did it really require 3 posts from you to reiterate that you don't intend to support the Beisels or the food pantry? We get it. That's the nice thing about fundraising--those who want to support something can choose to support it and those who don't can choose not to. Does it make you feel better to criticize them?
Mary Churchill-DaSilva July 25, 2012 at 02:56 PM
Thnnks again to Debbie Gardiner for her amazing fundraising efforts! What a great cause!
Dark star July 25, 2012 at 05:43 PM
@NK parent if you would read the article, and then all the posts in order, I think you will see I did not make 3 separate posts. I was responding to clarify a misinterpretation. The article did not mention anything about the food pantry. Samantha clarified this in a separate post....after my original post. Then I was accused of trashing the Beisels, which I clearly was not. Nor was I criticizing the olympian. I was questioning the fundraising effort to send the family and friends to London to watch a competition when there were 4 years to save money for the trip. Her ability is not a surprise nor was her standing as a U.S. hopeful. She was not a long-shot or a dark horse to go to London. Every subsequent post was clarifying someone criticizing my position, as is this post. Again as I said earlier, good luck to Elizabeth, I hope all her hard work and dedication comes together for her in London.

Maybe you should try the old adage: "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." On a more positive note: Go Elizabeth!
Dark star July 25, 2012 at 09:10 PM
and maybe you should utilize your "sage parenting advice" on your own children a bit more than you are currently.
Beth Johnson-Lessard July 26, 2012 at 03:14 AM
@Paul Marshall, I find it sad when someone does not have all the Fact's , but feel it is fine to call a Family ( FREELOADER'S ) and they should have been saving , nowing it was coming up. Does this person ( no name do I do not know if this is a man or woman ). I guess they do not know alot about the Olympic's , you have to qualify first , it is not a given until the day of the event. This was not a Fundraiser it was a Group of Friend's trying to help out a very nice family - little thing's in London are going to be extremly expensive , it is already expensive over there, but with the Olympic's there, you know all the cost's are going to go up sky high. I to Paul is a member of Team Beisel. Thank's for the Back Up!
Beth Johnson-Lessard July 26, 2012 at 03:29 AM
@ Tired of NK Antic's, First off , do not tell me how I interperted what you said, implying that I did not read your comment correctly. I did and if you knew your fact's you would not trash a family you obviously do not know. IF YOU KNEW ANYTHING IT WAS NOT CONSIDERED A FUNDRAISER, THERE WHERE NO PRESS OR TV. IT WAS A GROUP OF FRIEND'S WHO WANTED TO HELP THEM OUT THE EXPENSE'S THAT DO NOT INCLUDE SENDINGTHEM TO LONDON OR PAYING FOR THEIR HOTELROOM'S OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. THEY DID NOT WANT THIS AT FIRST , BUT WE GAVE THEM NO CHOICE. I DO NOT KNOW THERE FINANCAL SITUATION , NONE OF MY BUSINESS OR YOUR'S FOR THAT MATTER! WHEN YOU HAVE A FRIEND, AND KNOW HOW EXPENSIVE LONDON . ALL OF US FRIEND'S WANTED TO HELP THEM OUT & DO NOT IMPLY I AM AN IDIOT & YOUR COMMENT WAS SO HARD TO READ FAR FROM IT! AND I LIKE TO HELP MY FRIEND'S AND DON'T EVER TELL ME I DID NOT READ WHAT YOU SAID CLEARLY. SAYING THAT YOU ARE TRYING TO ACT ABOVE ME , AND YOU ARE FAR FROM THAT ! YOU HAVE NOTHING BETTER THAN TO TRASH A BENEFIT THAT THEIR ** FRIEND'S PUT ON !! WE WERE NOT ASKED TO DO THIS FOR THEM, THEY DIDN'T WANT IT AT FIRST . THEN THEY SAID YES, AS LONG AS PART OF IT GOES TO THE FOOD PANTRY. GET YOUR FACT'S STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU COME AT ME! I FOR ONE AM GKAS YOU R NOT TEAM BEISEL
Beth Johnson-Lessard July 26, 2012 at 03:40 AM
TO ; TIRE OF NK ANTIC'S ; None of this should have happened ! You are the one who decided to act like a HIGHSCHOOLER, and act like you knew any of the fact's which you did notl I like what the writer ; If you do not have anything nice to say , do not say anything at all. Some friend's wanted me to ignore this but I will not be BULLIED A ( AGAIN MAN OR WOMAN ) , you took something that a group of friend's did not the family & you made it sound horrible.. SHAME ON YOU ! This was one of the reason's we had to talk them into it. ALOT OF SMALL MIND'S WITHOUT ALL THE FACT'S, BUT FEEL'S LIKE THEY CAN SAY LIE'S & THAT IS OK , WELL I WAS NOT BORN DOWN IN SOUTH COUNTY, BUT HELPING FRIEND'S IS OUR BUSINESS. AND DON'T WORRY WE DO NOT ** NEED YOU ON TEAM BEISEL ** , I DON'T THINK THERE IS A SHIRT BIG ENOUGH TO GET OVER YOUR SWOLLEN HEAD! DECIDING THAT YOU KNOW ALL THE FACT'S WHEN YOU DO NOT !! AT ALL!!

You did not read my posts thoroughly or completely. You let your emotions get in the way and interpret it in a manner it was not given. Go to 630 wpro radio website. they had a blurb about the "thing" in naragansett and it was called a fundraiser. When funds are donated for a cause, it is commonly known as a fundraiser, as that is what you are doing; raising funds. Ergo a fundraiser.
Dark star July 26, 2012 at 04:34 AM
You are right, this never should have happened. You and your buddies let your emotions about the situation get in the way of a comment that did not agree with your position. Your inability to deal with opinions different than yours demonstrates your immaturity. I didn't realize you all were in charge of "Team Beisel". I hope she does well in London. As for you, I hope your cable goes out when she hits the pool!
Beth Johnson-Lessard July 26, 2012 at 08:06 AM
@Tired of NK antics, The only reason I responded to your Post was to set the record straight. But now you want to start with the INSULT'S . That just show's how little you know about what we did for the Beisels! But don't dare call me Immature when your the one who has to resort to NAME CALLING. I AM DONE, YOUR ARE A SAD PERSON & JUST BECAUSE YOU HEAR SOMETHING ON THE RADIO DOES NOT MAKE IT TRUE! OTHERWISE WHAT ALL OF US THINK OF YOU WOULD BE TRUE. DON'T GIVE ME DEFINATION'S OF A FUNDRAISER, IT WAS NOT ONE. YOU ARE A WASTE OF MY TIME. YOU STARTED ALL THIS WITH YOUR ** FALSE INFO. ** ON WHAT WE DID ON TUESDAY. THIS IS WHAT IS EXAMPLE OF SINKING TO YOUR LEVEL- YOU LIKE YOUR BIG WORD'S - GETTING READY FOR YOUR G.E.D. TEST ! I AM HAVE HAD IT WITH YOUR INSULT'S & STUPIDITY ! WHY DON'T YOU DO SOMETHING BETTER WITH YOUR TIME THEN INSULT PEOPLE. THE ONE THING I HOPE IS SOMEONE FROM N.K. HIGHSCHOOL READ'S THIS & THEN YOU CAN CHAT WITH A TEENAGER, WHO YOU ARE MORE ON THE EDUCATED LEVEL WITH. DON'T WRITE ME , YOU STARTED W/YOUR 1st.POST, & WHEN YOU WERE CALLED ON A LIE OR FALSE INFO., ALL YOU KNOW HOW TO DO IS THROW INSULT'S OR THREATEN. MY CABLE WILL BE FINE !! GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR G.E.D. MAKE SURE YOU LET ELIZABETH NOW HOW YOU FEEL IF YOU ARE SO GUTSY! AGAIN, YOUR G.E.D. TEST MAY BE HARD IF YOU CANNOT BRING A DICTIONARY WITH YOU. NOW YOUR FACT'S BEFORE YOU INSULT A FRIEND, WATCHING DRYING PAINT IS MORE THAN TALKING TO YOU.

Profit-Making Organizations and Private Citizens Private citizens and organizations without tax-exempt status may be liable for income tax on fundraising profits. If an organization's annual gross income is less than $5,000 from outside sources, it will not have to file a federal or state tax return. However, if the organization's gross income is higher than this amount, the income is usually taxable. In addition, sales tax applies to fundraising items sold by profit-making organizations and private citizens. I CANNOT BE ON THE WEB ALL DAY - I OWN A BUSINESS, I SAID EARLIER I WAS NO LONGER RESPONDING TO YOU. BUT ONE THING IS LEFT , YOU HAVE NO OPINION , YOU HAVE TO LOOK UP EVERYTHING ON THE NET & THEN SAY IT. AS A BUSINESS OWNER - I DO NOT DO THAT, YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO ANSWER OR RESPOND , RIGHT WHEN YOU ARE ASKED. I LET OTHER PEOPLE HAVE OPINION'S AT WORK WITHOUT INSULTING SOMEONE. ** AGAIN YOU TOOK A NICE THING & TRIED TO RUIN IT ** !! YOU DID NOT FOR ME , BUT THAT IS A SAD WAY TO LIVE. Good Luck Elizabeth !!!! Now that being said, I agree that they should have been saving up the money for the past 4 years just in case she did accomplish her goal of making it to the Olympic team again. If someone wants to help the food pantry, they could do so of their own volition. I pray that she can bring home the Gold because she certainly deserves it for all the time and hard work she has put into this, and am very proud that a local girl made it. You are a special young lady Elizabeth!

You are getting all uptight because I don't agree with your(and others) way of thinking. I did not disparage anyone on here with any of my posts, I simply gave my opinion. Since it differs from yours (and others), you chose to call names. How mature of you.
