Coming This Spring – Ticks Galore!

2012 decided that spring would come early. In the past month, we've experienced warm weather that was even beach worthy at some points.  But, because of the warmer weather we've been having, this means ticks are more likely to come out this spring in bigger numbers.

According to a report on Yahoo! "Eggs will hatch sooner.  Eggs are already in the ground, but this is the time that they will be coming out in great numbers."  Normal tick season is from May to August but because of the warm weather you may have already started to see ticks back in April.

One thing that is never mentioned about ticks is the fact that they can survive over the winter. That's right, ticks burrow deep into the ground or even in wild animals to stay safe from the winter. 

There are two reasons why this may be.  For one, the tick living cycle can be from three months to as much as three years.  Ticks also when they are full from feeding off a host, will drop off their host and search for a new one.  This is another way ticks have an advantage in finding your pets or yourself to feed upon.  That's why we have some tips for this spring and some products that will better protect your pets from the upcoming tick season.

Take a stance against ticks and even fleas by: 

• Have several brushes and combs, so that you can check your pet easier after taking them out for a walk or just when they go outside in general.
• Get proper medications and vaccinations when needed.  Your vet is always there to help you.  Staying on top of vaccinations and even medications can help ward off these nasty critters.
• Avoid tall grass and brush while outdoors. These are preying grounds for ticks.
• Call your vet immediately if you think your pets or animals have ticks to make sure they don’t contract any diseases. 
  Diseases such as Lyme disease can be contracted after 36 to 48 hours.
