NK Runners Finish First In 2nd Annual Turkey Trot

Eric Lonergan and Mary Najarian, both of North Kingstown, are the first man and woman to cross the finish line at the 5K Saturday in downtown East Greenwich.

It happened to be Mary Najarian's 23rd birthday Saturday and perhaps that gave the North Kingstown resident the extra push needed to finish the Hill and Harbour Turkey Trot 5K strong, since she captured first place for women with a time of 20:07. Eric Lonergan, 27, another North Kingstown resident, took first place overall, with a winning time of 16:08.

They were among the more than 500 participants in the 5K, with another 100-plus participating in the one-mile Fun Run. Temperatures were cool but dry, with a stiff wind in the open areas of the course, runners said.

The race was sponsored by the Main Street Association and the East Greenwich Lions Club and proceeds will benefit the EG Animal Protection League.
