Steven Siller "Tunnel To Towers" 9/11 Memorial 5k

On September 22, 2012 the North Kingstown Fire Fighters and the RI Blue Star Mom’s once again challenge you to follow in the footsteps of a hero….

The Steven Siller “Tunnel To Towers” Run is a 5K run that
annually memorializes those that were lost during the tragic events of 9/11.Steven Siller was a member of FDNY, and was on his way home to Brooklyn following his night shift at the firehouse when the first plane struck the
World Trade Center. Upon hearing the news, he turned his vehicle around and tried to get back to the station, but at that point the Battery Tunnel was blocked with traffic.  Steven proceeded to abandon his vehicle, strap his gear to his back and run the roughly three-mile distance to reach the WTC. He reached his destination and joined in the efforts to help those in need, only to lose his life later
that day when the Towers fell.

In recognition of Steven Siller’s ultimate sacrifice, as
well as a remembrance of all those lost on September 11, the Steven Siller “Tunnel To Towers” Run was created. It is held every year in New York City, and garners thousands of participants annually from around the world. As we solemnly mark this year’s anniversary of that tragic day, a few select “satellite” races are being held around the country.  The North Kingstown Fire Fighters Association and the RI Blue Star Moms are extremely proud and honored to once again host the only race in the region.

The events of 9/11 changed all of our lives forever. There
are no words to describe the significance of that day to each one of us.  However, the story of FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller embodies the courage, determination, and heroism of all involved in the horrific events of that day.
The selfless actions of Stephen Siller are immortalized in this event, and serve as a reminder of the common thread that we all share as Americans, regardless of occupation, social standing, or political ideology.

We all came together eleven years ago for a common cause. We can do it again.
