Beisel Wins Silver Medal

Elizabeth Beisel of North Kingstown won the silver medal in the 400-meter individual medley on Saturday.

Elizabeth Beisel is coming home from London with some new jewelry. North Kingstown's Beisel won the silver medal in the women's 400-meter individual medley on Saturday at the Aquatic Center in the 2012 London Olympics.

– but came up short to China's Ye Shiwen who set a world record in the event. Beisel finished with a time of 4 minutes 31.27 seconds, roughly three seconds behind Ye Shiwen who finished in 4:28.43.

Beisel has another chance at the gold with her second event – the 200-meter backstroke – scheduled to begin on Thursday.

We should have a homecoming for her.

I agree Mark!

I'll contact the school dept people who work with her mother and who raised some money to send the family to watch in London. I think that would be a good place to start.

FYI, Liz Dolan wrote on NK Patch's Facebook page that the town's planning a parade for her.

Thank You Mark, I really appreciate it !

Thanks Samantha for the info on the town's plans. Should be fun.

Awesome job by Liz and glad the town will be honoring her with a parade celebrating her silver medal for now, as I would not be shocked if that medal turns to Gold in the near future as controversy surrounds the Chinese swimmer's performance, as in was it enhanced. Good luck to Elizabeth in her remaining event!

Wow, had not read about the controversy. Will have to check that out

Very interesting article. Not sure how this plays out though. Regarding a homecoming for Elizabeth I found out that she may be back here for a week quite soon. I'll contact Liz Nolan and see what's up.

I say it plays out that the swimmer from China gets caught when the anti doping federation catches up to the dopers and is able to detect the latest and greatest performance enhancer (sometime within the next 8 years) and the Liz gets the Gold.

The eight year thing is what I got out of too. What a crazy situation...if the swimmer if found to have violated the rules will that give Liz the gold?

I recall seeing this kid at a SC meeting when she first emerged as the local swimming star that she is. I could only think of all the hard work and focus that she put forward toward the goal. When you see a young person who can do that, it makes one think the world will be in good hands when these types of determined, capable young people take positions of leadership in the future!

That's the truth. NKSD really does help foster talented and upright citizens!

Whoops, MeanE, you already answered my question
