Beisel Qualifies For London Olympics

Saunderstown native Elizabeth Beisel is heading to the London Olympics.

London, here she comes. Elizabeth Beisel qualified for her second appearance in the Summer Olympics Monday night with a first-place finish in the 400-meter individual medley – a full four seconds ahead of second-place Caitlin Leverenz and nearly setting an American record.

According to Rodger Sherman of SB Nation, "Leverenz jumped out to a lead with her butterfly stroke but, once the backstroke kicked in, nobody really had a chance."

The 19-year-old Saunderstown native and 2010 will join big names like Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte in London later this summer as part of the U.S. Olympic Swim Team.

Though Beisel has already punched her ticket with her top-place finish in the 400-meter individual medley (her best event for which she took home the world championship last year), she will also compete in eight other events for qualifying this week in Omaha.
