Sprigs Branches Out, Opens 2nd Shop In Wickford

Janice O’Connell and her husband Tom usually go out to eat on Main Street in EG, but in early October, they ventured down to Wickford’s Tavern by the Sea. And, while there, they happened to see a “for rent” sign right next door. The space is between the restaurant and The World Store.

Today, less than two months later, the space is the site of O’Connell’s second Sprigs store, which opened Nov. 16. The first shop is at 422 Main Street.

“I have always enjoyed and admired Wickford, it is very scenic and charming, and I have always thought Sprigs would be a good fit there,” said O’Connell. “We went and we saw the sign and I couldn’t resist,” she said. “Love the space – love, love, love it.”

Sprigs is a flower, plant and gift shop that first opened seven years ago at 232 Main St. (the location of Alex & Ani now). Two and a half years ago, she moved to 422 Main Street. O’Connell, who moved to East Greenwich from Massachusetts, said she opened Sprigs after seeing a niche.

She noticed many of the florists in the area didn’t offer a lot of options for customers.

“They didn’t have a lot of cash-and-carry things, a little $25 arrangement or a little $15 arrangement,” said O’Connell. “That’s what I try to do.”

Plants, in particular, have become a mainstay.

“If you nestle a nice little plant in a pot and add a little moss and it makes a nice gift,” she said. “We feel our gifts reflect flowers and plants, gifts that complement plants. We do a lot of fair trade now too.”

O’Connell said she will spend most of her time in East Greenwich, where much of the floral prep work will continue take place.

“I have the most amazing staff that I can send down there and they can be the new face of Sprigs,” she said. “I’m very comfortable.”
