Three North Kingstown Grads Receive State Civic Leadership Award

Jeffrey Sabo, Victoria Briody and Erica Santos were all honored with the award.

Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis honored local students this week with the 2011 State Civic Leadership Awards, including three North Kingstown students.

"This award honors students who show an understand of the importance of public service has in a democratic society," said Mollis. "These students take the principles of civics and put them into action at home and at school."

St. Mary Academy Bay View graduate Victoria Briody (North Kingstown), Bishop Hendricken High School graduate Jeffrey Sabo (Saunderstown) and Rocky Hill School graduate Erica Santos (Saunderstown) were all recognized with the award for their outstanding contributions to their schools and community.

Briody was a member of the National Honor Society, the National English Honor Society, the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society and the Excalibur National Science Honor Society. Additionally, Briody was a member of the Math Team, the Mercy Action Club and the Bay View's varsity sailing team. In her spare time, she volunteers at the and Rhode Island Hospital.

Santos was a member of the Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and was named Senior Prefect at Rocky Hill – the highest honor a student can receive at teh school. She also volunteers for Habitat for Humanity and Relay for Life.

More than 70 high schools from around the state nominated one male and one female for the award.
