School Committee Member Calls For New Chairperson

School Committee member Bill Mudge is requesting the committee vote for a new chair.

The North Kingstown School Committee might see its second chairperson in less than four months if one committee member has his wish. The committee looks to discuss electing a new chair at Monday night's meeting, at the request of committee member Bill Mudge.

In December, after a 30-minute, nine-motion session to name both the committee's chair and vice-chair.

“We’re heading in the wrong direction,” said Mudge. “We’ve alienated the Town Council and poisoned the well there. Our meeting agendas haven’t been followed, just like my requests to put things on the agenda.”

Mudge said he initially requested the re-election issue be included on the agenda as an action, not a discussion item. Mudge also criticized Welch’s handling of the Jamestown tuition situation and not seeking Jamestown’s allocation towards the high school’s debt service.

Mudge said he plans to nominate vice-chair Kimberly Page as the new chair, as he did in December. Mudge said he hopes Page will “re-establish ties with the Town Council.”

“Anyone who votes no for Kim Page is saying they’re satisfied with the way things are running,” said Mudge.

Tonight’s meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the auditorium.
