NK'S Andrews is RIIL Student Athlete of the Year

But it's more than just her time on the field that got her the accolade.

North Kingstown High School Junior Sarah Andrews has been named the Athlete of the Year by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.

Andrews was recognized at a ceremony on April 8 at the Quidnessett Country Club and received a $1,000 scholarship to the college of her choice thanks in part to sponsor Burger King.

You might think that the award comes from being a star athlete as she plays on the Skipper's soccer and swim teams as well as running track in her freshman and sophomore years.

Though her prowess on the field helps, it's also what she's doing off the field that makes her worthy of the Athlete of the Year award from the state's interscholastic sports organization.

In town, she's held an annual fundraiser to benefit the Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County and has raised more than $3,000 in recent years.

She coaches youth soccer at Ocean State Soccer Club.

She's ranked no. 1 in her class of 358 and takes all honors and Advanced Placement courses.

She's in the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, NKHS Leadership Academy, a member of NKHS Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse and won the class of 2015 top history student award after her first and second year.

She also served as the school's ambassador for the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership program for the class of 2015.

Not only that, she finds time to play music, playing first-chair trombone in the NKHS Symphonic Band and Senior Jazz Band. She was named to the RHode Island Senior All State band in 2014 as well.
