NKHS's Miranda Johnson Named To National Honors Choir

Later this month, Johnson will travel to Nashville, Tenn., to sing with 670 of the best high school choral singers in the country.

North Kingstown High School junior Miranda Johnson has been singing her entire life. "My parents actually met over music when my dad asked my mom to accompany his voice lessons so it's in my blood," she said.

So perhaps it's no surprise that Johnson has been named to the 2013 NAfME All-National Honors Choir sponsored by the National Association for Music Education. She will join more than 670 high school students from around the country to perform at a gala concert on Oct. 30 in Nashville, Tennessee.

"Miranda Johnson is a very gifted singer and we are very proud of her accomplishments," said NKHS Fine Arts Dept. Chair Norma Caiazza in a news release.

"There are also recordings of me singing when I was 2 or 3 little church songs that I learned," said Johnson. "It has been the one thing in my life that I have been consistent with. I have tried soccer and theater, but I found my true passion was in music, specifically choral music."

What got her really serious about choral singing was when she was made All State as a freshman and participated in All State Choir program.

I didn't start getting serious however about singing until I was in my freshman year of high school where I was able to be a part of the All State Choir for Rhode Island with an amazing guest conductor and a new voice teacher.

"The guest conductor for that year of All State motivated me to do something more with my voice and so that May I auditioned for the Boston Children's Chorus ... and was able to get into the Concert Choir, which is one of the top choirs in the organization.

The guest conductor for the All State Choir concert – Anthony Trecek-King – is artistic director of the Boston Children's Chorus.

"It was my training there that really led my to be able to get into a National Choir," said Johnson, who now sings in BCC's Premier Choir. "Truth be told, I have no idea how I got in, but it's a blessing for me to have this opportunity."

Johnson said she is thinking about studying either conducting or vocal performance in college.

"Singing is my passion and what I put my heart and soul into," she said.
