NK Teacher Receives 2012 Amgen Award for Science Teaching

North Kingstown's Diane Henault was recently announced as the recipient of the state's 2012 recipient of the Amgen Award for Science Teaching.

is getting national praise this week. Diane Henault, a teacher at , was recently announced as Rhode Island's 2012 recipient of the Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence.

Henault is one of only nine teachers across the US, Canada and Puerto Rico to receive the honors this year. The Amgen Award recognizes extraordinary teachers who have "demonstrated an outstanding ability to inspire their students and produce exemplary results in science education."

"She is truly committed to her students to ensure that all children succeed and love to learn," said Superintendent Phil Auger in an email to the district. "Her enthusiasm and passion for teaching are very evident to anyone who has seen her in the classroom. She is a shining example of the great teaching we have in North Kingstown."

Henault learned the news Monday morning during a surprise school assembly. A second grade teacher at Stony Lane, Henault has worked in the district for 11 years and has served as its elementary school science coordinator for the past three.

As part of the honors, Henault was awarded $5,000 for school science materials and another $5,000 for herself.
