Kindergarteners Do the 'Turkey Trot' for Food Pantry

Quidnessett Elementary's kindergarteners hit their school's neighborhood streets to collect food for the North Kingstown Food Pantry.

For , no student is too young to learn the importance of giving back to their community. Friday morning, the school's four kindergarten classes headed out into the local neighborhood for its second annual Turkey Trot to collect food for the North Kingstown Food Pantry.

"It's just something to teach the children about giving back and helping others in need," said Liz Tully, the school's secretary.

Fifty-six students – aided by parent volunteers and teachers Allison Chatowsky, Kim Ferguson, Paula Schartner and winner of Channel 10's Golden Apple Award Amy Clarke – visited 120 houses in the Quidnessett neighborhood with wheelbarrows in tow. Earlier this week, parent volunteers went house to house to drop off flyers about Friday's collection.

But, the giving doesn't end there for Quidnessett Elementary School. Next month, the students and staff will be creating six to eight quilts to donate to the homeless shelter. Each student will craft one patch for a quilt made by each grade level.
