Davisville Wins Overtime Soccer Thriller 4-3

After squandering a 3-0 lead with 15 minutes remaining against Feinstein, Davisville survives through a dicey overtime and wins in the opening seconds of the second overtime session.

MIDDLETOWN – In a game of wild swings, the Davisville Dragons got the benefit of the final one, using a goal 15 seconds into a second overtime period to beat the Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School of Coventry 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Zach Cook was the hero of the night, with the winning goal and two others, for a hat trick. He made a run for Davisville at the start of the second overtime, and cutting through two defenders to receive a thru-ball, he flicked a shot in the back-right corner of the net, clinching the state title for the Dragons.

According to Davisville head coach Jameson Logiodice, this is the first time the Dragons got past the second round of the playoffs, never mind winning a title.

“They stayed in every game this year,” he said. “I couldn’t be prouder.”

The goal capped a dramatic night for Feinstein and Davisville at Gaudet Middle School, as the game swung between highs and lows for both teams.

Davisville got on the scoreboard first. In the 13th minute, Cook took a free kick from about 12 yards out. (See video.) With a heavy fog still on the field, he hit the top-left corner of the net, past the dive of the goalkeeper.

The game remained at 1-0 until the second half. In the 41st minute, Cook scored on a run to the net. Davisville got what looked to be a game-clinching third goal in the 44th minute from Ethan Scott.

For whatever reason that goal seemed to snap Feinstein out of its funk. Less than 60 seconds later, Stavros Zarokostas stroked his first goal of the match, from about 15 yards out.

The Falcons scored again in the 46th minute, pulling with 3-2 with more than 13 minutes remaining. Nick D’Ambra had the cap. Desperately clinging to the lead, Davisville turned away several attempts by Feinstein over the next 10 minutes to knot the score.

However, with less than 30 seconds remaining, a Feinstein player was fouled just outside the box. Zarokostas took the kick and buried it, tying the game.

Feinstein head coach Kevin Seekell said that during the year, his team often alternated stretches of poor and great play.

“We played well for stretches of the second half,” he said.

The Falcons dominated the first overtime period, putting several shots on goal. But the Dragons weathered the attacks, and made it through the period, setting the stage for Cook’s final goal.

“We probably had four good chances to win in that first overtime,” Feinstein head coach Kevin Seekell said. “You’d almost rather get blown out than lose in a close game like that.”

He added, “You’ve got to be happy, once the sting wears off.”

Logiodice said his team was mostly comprised of eighth graders. It is his second year as the head coach of the program, and he did have a good feeling coming into the year.

“I knew we had a team that could compete,” he said.
