Boys Soccer: Rooney Reaches Milestone as Hawks Sink Skippers

Bishop Hendricken defeats North Kingstown 2-0, giving Hawks head coach Michael Rooney the most wins ever in Rhode Island in boys soccer

The team and the coach shared one thing in common on Monday night. Each of them got a monkey off of their backs.

's boys soccer team traveled to Bishop Hendricken on Monday night to take on the Hawks. The teams were evenly matched throughout, but the Skippers could not capitalize on their scoring chances. After not scoring in their first two games, Hendricken finally got on the scoreboard, winning 2-0.

The Hawks were controlling the pace of the game during the first 20 minutes, maintaining possession for abot 65 percent of the game with numerous scoring chances.

With just under 12 minutes left in the half, Hendricken got on the scoreboard. Junior Brexton Kinney crossed the ball from the right sideline and sophomore Christopher Cambio ripped it into the back of the net.

"We had not scored a goal in the first two games and our first goal tonight was like a monkey off of our backs," Hawks coach Michael Rooney said.

Cambio blasted a shot from the top of the box and it missed by inches to the right of the goal with under five minutes left in the first half.

Early in the second half, the Hawks maintained possession and had opportunities to increase their lead. Kinney's shot from 25 yards out on the right sideline was perfectly placed in the upper 90, giving Hendricken a 2-0 lead about 12 minutes into the second half.

During the last 20 minutes of the game, North Kingstown applied pressure and attacked the net. They had several chances to put one in the back of the net, but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities.

Hendricken's win placed their coach Michael Rooney into the record books. He has the most wins ever in boys soccer in the state of Rhode Island.

"This is not really about me, I have had some great players over the years," he said.

"I am really happy that we got the win tonight and we needed to score some goals tonight," the coach added.
