The National Merit Scholarship program is based on results of the PSAT exam. Each year approximately 1.5 million students around the country take the PSAT exam in preparation for the SATs. Based on the results of that exam, 50,000 students are honored each year for their exceptional performance, with the top 15,000 students continuing on to the semifinalist round.

This is one of the most prestigious honors that a student can earn during their high school experience, according to NKHS officials.
