Town Council Adopts Preliminary Budget

The NK Town Council has adopted a preliminary budget which would result in a four percent tax increase.

The North Kingstown Town Council adopted its preliminary budget of $96 million for the town this week. The budget would see a tax increase of 4.02 percent, up to 17.53 percent this year, up from 16.85.

Among the proposed cuts are the closing of the town's animal shelter, the elimination of curbside recycling, the elimination of road paving and the reduction of contractors and road salt. The budget also proposes eliminating the full-time position of harbormaster after the upcoming retirement of Mark Knapp, the current harbormaster, this year. These cuts, along with several others, would total up to approximately $1.2 million.

The Town Council will hold a public hearing on April 11 at 6 p.m. at  for anyone wishing to voice concerns over the budget. A hearing for the school's side begins at 7 p.m.
