Page Remains School Committee Chair, Ceresi Vice Chair

The newly-formed North Kingstown School Committee elected its chair and vice-chair Monday night.

In its first meeting together, the 2012 North Kingstown School Committee elected its officers for the next two years. Kimberly Page will remain chair with Larry Ceresi as vice-chair following the 6-1 vote. Bill Mudge was the only opposing vote.

The swift vote was in stark contrast to the previous biennial organizational meeting back in December 2010, when it took a whopping nine motions for the committee to name a chair and vice-chair.

The committee welcomed incoming members Cheryl Clarkin and Robert Jones, . The two filled the vacant seats of Melvoid Benson, who chose not to run for re-election, and Richard Welch, who was elected to the North Kingstown Town Council in the election. (Read more about Melvoid Benson's farewell here.)

The group appointed members to various sub-committees during their inaugural meeting together. Clarkin, Jones and Bill Mudge were appointed to the budget sub-committee.

At the recommendation of Ceresi, the committee decided to table the appointment of a liaison to the teachers' union negotiating sub-committee. The committee will discuss the matter at its next meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

Hopefully this committee will run much smoother than the previous one.

Ceresi is a good man. I heard he was considering a run for US Senate. I was so hoping he would stay on our school committee, we still need you there Larry!

Next Senate race is in 2 years, his SC term will be up. Then God help us all.

The committee is made up of more than one person. I'm sure his empty seat will invite many high caliber replacements.

Not a prayer with Mudge still there. He is the poster-boy of dysfunctional.
MeanE December 05, 2012 at 03:56 PM
Like the fact that Clarkin, Jones, and Mudge are on the budget sub-committee. I guess Larry's "threats" on leaving the SC didn't involve Clarkin or Jones. A side note, how is the seating determined for the meetings? I personally would like to see a different set up on stage. Split up the alliances, mix in the newly elected, and maybe the chatter while others are speaking will subside, and maybe members could vote independent of other voices sitting next to them. A seating assignment of Page, Mudge, Avanzato, Jones, Boscardin, Clarkin, Ceresi might just cut down on some of the shenanagans by ALL!
Politics Sheriff of NK December 05, 2012 at 06:31 PM
WHO is "chattering"? Are they not allowed to communicate with each other? Or the like-minded to be aligned? Really.
MeanE December 05, 2012 at 07:41 PM
Larry is that biggest culprit of talking to others while someone else has the floor, but they all seem to do it. Should they communicate when others are speaking? I say NO! If they have something to say, say it into the mic so that we all can hear it. The whispering behind the mics is distracting and rude. The like-minded, I like that! Good one. Everyone complains at how much of a circus the meetings are. Most blame it all on Mudge. He probably should get the majority of the blame. However, I feel that this arrangement would alleviate some of the theatrics that happen on a regular basis. I think it is easier for people to argue from a distance then it is to argue when next to one another and by splitting up the "like-minded"/"alliances" we MAY be able to see people think for themselves on issues that are brought to a vote. Do you know why the seating assignments are set up the way that they are? I know that seating assignments may sound juvenile, but from what I have witnessed of SC meetings, it may be fitting.
NK WATCH December 05, 2012 at 09:45 PM
MeanEric; people are "talking"? Have you ever watched cspan or capitol tv? In federal and state legislature NOBODY sits there in silence while someone else is talking, infact EVERYONE is talking to eachother while someone else is talking. When someone interupts or talks over someone that has the floor, THAT's rude! The only one I have ever seen do that is bill mudge. I have never seen Larry or any other sc members interupt or talk over anyone. They rasies their hand and do not take the floor until they are allowed. It's one thing to "talk to others" it's another thing to INTERRUPT OR TALK OVER OTHERS.

There has been exactly ONE meeting of the new School committee. Don't you think we should give them the benefit of the doubt for a few? The way I saw it, Boscardin was/is seated between Avanzato and Ceresi. That should cut down on some of it. Maybe Clarkin should sit between Jones and Mudge. The video picked up on those two having side discussions once or twice. Would you like to invoke a dress-code as well MeanE? Lol!!
MeanE December 05, 2012 at 10:23 PM
I love it. How many pseudonyms do you have on here now. I forget which one I am commenting with sometimes. LOL As the old saying goes, If all your friends jumped off a bridge... Just because federal and state do it, doesn't mean that it is right. It may be an accepted practice, it doesn't mean that I have to like it. I find it just as rude as interrupting or talking over others. I may be in the minority on this one, but I feel that a switching of seat assignments would be a good thing to try out. If you are at a function and speaking with a small group of people, you're telling a story, and a person in the group whispers into the ear of another while your speaking. How would that make you feel? To me when there are hands over the mics and whispers in the back, it is the same thing. Tell me WatchNKspending.org, are you against mixing up the seats in the meetings. If so, why? The way it looks now and the way it has looked in the past, the seating sets up for a debate, a showdown, it pits alliances against one another from the get go. Shouldn't the committee try and work together? Maybe moving seats would have a negative impact, maybe it wouldn't, maybe eliminating the whispers and chatter may make things more amiable? We won't know if things stay the same. From what I have heard, read, and witnessed, most don't want much of the same. So why not try something different. Maybe Bill might not be as combative under different circumstances. We'll see?
NK WATCH December 05, 2012 at 11:45 PM
It appears to me and many others "the committee" minus mudge, DOES work together and get along. Watch a meeting when benson and mudge are absent, the other committee members are getting a lot of work done EVERYONE is respectful and they actually laugh and have lighthearted talks
Dave December 05, 2012 at 11:47 PM
Well Meane, the way I understand it, the Committee, most likely the Chair decides on seating but I'm not sure of that. Unless you want to pass some kind of ordinance about it (not possible), I think you are slightly (lol) micromanaging. Let's give this group a chance and see how they do....
Politics Sheriff of NK December 06, 2012 at 01:16 AM
Uhhh there is no web site at watchnkspending.org A little paranoia goes a loooooong way here, Meane go get some fresh air man!
Jim Lawrence December 06, 2012 at 01:20 AM
I have to agree with Sheriff and Watch...
MeanE December 06, 2012 at 01:45 PM
OMG, you don't say! The alliance was laughing & lighthearted when Mudge & Benson were not there. That is so shocking. You mean it what easier for them when there was no dissenting opinions? Say it isn't so. Thanks for that tid bit captain obvious.
MeanE December 06, 2012 at 01:46 PM
Thanks for your thoughts on the seating. By all means I will give this group a chance.
MeanE December 06, 2012 at 01:50 PM
Paranoia? Is there something that I should be paranoid about? A suggestion to move seats, and a comment about perceived rudeness now equals being paranoid. Thanks for educating me on that.
MeanE December 06, 2012 at 02:01 PM
Jim - If you are truly Jim Lawrence, you do realize that Sheriff & Watch are one in the same. And obviously you do, since you called him by name in another patch article regarding Larry, before he was bounced form the site. Hmmm...maybe just another pseudonym?

Looks to me like the gang-bullying mentality of this crew hasn't gone away MeanE. Elections are over...business as usual!!! Very interesting...........
Jim Lawrence December 07, 2012 at 05:50 AM
MeanE, I have no idea who is who, but I am me. But I did see posts in which NKGOP Watch, NK Watch, Sheriff, Scott M, Dave, and my name, and maybe a couple others, were all supposed to be Larry C, Lynda A, and co.! I can ASSURE you that I am not them, and I suspect they or any combination, are not all the same. I HAVE seen NKGOP Watch say 'they' were more than one person though. I have also seen Dick, Lynda, AND Larry post under their own names so why wouldnt they do that all the time? And if any of them were 'bounced', they bounced back because they all post comments. And since after all, YOU go by a pseudonym yourself, so I say just go with the flow, if you see something you want to add to, then just do so.
