According to North Kingstown police reports included in court documents, the charge stems from an accident between two motorcycles – Derocher’s and another driven by a 32-year-old West Warwick man.

Police said the victim and another witness claimed that Derocher was driving well over the speed limit and cut off the victim, forcing him to lose control of his motorcycle. Derocher did not stop to check on the man’s condition.

The accident occurred near Electric Boat in North Kingstown, and police searched the surrounding area for a motorcycle matching the description given by the victim and several other witnesses. An investigation by police over the following weeks led them to another business in the area with the motorcycle.

At this point, police interviewed Derocher, who said he was involved in the accident. He told police that he saw it, but didn’t stop because he was late for work. Derocher was arrested in May 2010.

According to police, the victim suffered a fractured spine, along with torn ligaments in his right shoulder, right knee and right foot.
